I cashed out a while ago, and was a standard junkie. Now, I realize I need to get into some form of an non-rotation format to be more wise with my money.
This website mtgowikiprice seems pretty good, along with mtggoldfish, but how would people recommend I go about buying up new collections. I play casually but will also want a beater deck to go into dailies with and try to make some tickets to fund buying more stuff.
But before I worry about buying cards...is Modern popular in MTgO? Standard rules the roost which is fine, but does modern even get good games? Or ever get good games?
Hope this all makes sense.
Also maybe I just was a naive customer, but MTGOtraders had great prices a few years ago, now it seems that even if you bought cards with paypal discounts from them, you can almost always do better elsewhere by buying tix from the store and hunting out the random bots listed on mtgowikiprice for the expensive money cards.
Please advise
This thread is me asking in too many words for buying advice on how to re-enter. Strategies, tips, dont do this trust me posts welcome
Looking to try out a new card site, but need an incentive? Want to buy 2 NM Hallowed Fountains for less than $13 shipped? Send me your email in a PM and I can get you a coupon for $5 off of your first order of $10 or more at cardtitan.com!
Modern is a popular format, the daily events fire (sadly the premier events do not). It's hyper competitive, a lot less brews are in that format since the barrier to entry is pretty high. So hopefully you're familiar with most of the decks in the format.
I think the best way is to build your deck is to buy bot credit from a bot chain. As you get a better rate than buying tickets from the store.
I think goatbots has the best prices, but they don't sell some of the cheaper cards. There probably are some other chains that offer bot credit, but I remember them off the top of my head. Mtgotraders has some coupons, like darkestpaypal which give you 8% off your order if you use paypal. I'm pretty sure if you use coupons their prices are very competitive, but I haven't done the math lately, so I could be wrong.
I'd buy your modern cards asap, as they just had MMA drafts, so a lot of modern staples are cheaper than they were a month ago. And now that daily events are back (they were down for a month), more people are playing constructed magic, so modern card prices will go up. This is especially true since the standard dailies hit their cap of 128, so people will probably be looking to buy into other formats to play.

The coupon that rickster posted above will help and the thing about MTGOwiki is it lists various bot chains and most of those bots only have 1 or 2x of the card and they do not share credits or even have the card to begin with. No bot/site is cheapest 100% of the time and I do not claim to be but I do however have almost all the cards in stock at a very reasonable price.

How can some bots beat you by over 15% on "big" STD cards like Blood Baron? Or any big card. I know from past chats with you inside mtgo years ago your bots were fast to update and you rarely werent competitively priced but sometimes its a 5 + ticket difference on big cards. Are they just eating a loss at that point? Or were your bots just slow to update? Or is that just the business? Im not mad or picking on you just wondering because when I last played it was either you or card nexus, no one could really beat you consistently it seemed. Now sometimes I feel sad buying 15 tickets from a store to buy card X when you have it listed for 19.8 but other bot asks 14.8 or something. Id always rather pay my money to small private businesses before giving it directly to WoTC.

Would you mind sharing some examples of 5 tickets differences with the card name and the bot that has them in stock? Remember some bots list cards they do not actually have. Do not worry I take no offense to your post at all but I feel like there is some sort of misunderstanding. A five ticket difference in price is pretty hard to believe or even a 15% difference.

Blood Baron was one a couple days ago according to MTGOwikiprice, is that a bad source? Next time it happens Ill send you a PM on this site.
Wikiprice is not reliable at all. Some of the bots list cheap prices but don't have any of those cards in stock. I'm not sure if that's a wikiprice updating issue, or the bots lie about their inventory. I think it might be both.
I would use goatbots or clanteam to compare prices. Sadly supernova isn't that great anymore, but they are pretty slow to update their prices on their cards, so you can get good deals occasionally.

Thanks! Also welcome back to Mtgo and I'm always happy to chat on Mtgo as well. Haven't been on as much lately due to a knee injury but add my personal account wilmheath if you want. Thanks for the feedback and have fun playing.

Basically Goatbot and clanteambot crush MTGOTraders/Cardbot/Marlon. I have yet to find a card I couldn't get cheaper from one of the 2.
I politely disagree with this statement. As of right this second the first card I pulled up we are cheaper on which is stormbreath dragon.
We are also paying more for a lot of the cards that I checked. Multavault from m14 just for example(yes we do sell for more atm)
Our prices change rapidly based on supply/demand and one group is not always the cheapest. I have never claimed to be the cheapest 100% of the time and I doubt that goatbots does either. However our margins are extremely similar to goatbots margins so it's really just a matter of checking both places if you really want to spend the time to save.

I think rickster_ pretty much answered this question so I'm going to lock this before it becomes a store discussion/comparison thread.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
