I'm planning on getting ready for vintage on MODO. Many of the cards are already expensive, but I'm interested in everyone's advice on how to be as prepared as possible for Vintage. My goal is not speculation, I just want to buy a playset (or singleton!) of whatever cards I need to play basically the entire format by around the time vintage comes out.
Stuff I've recently picked up, that may be in Vintage Masters:
Mishra's Workshop
Bazaar of Baghdad
Strip Mine (restricted)
Demonic Tutor (restricted)
Stuff I'm considering:
Mana Drain
Oath of Druids (is now the time after Exodus draft?)
Sphere of Resistance (is now the time after Exodus draft?)
Vampiric Tutor
Tangle Wire (after MM Draft)
Gush (after MM draft)
Stuff I'm definitely going to wait for:
Hurkyl's Recall
Any other thoughts on cards/timing to pick up? Also I'm interested in speculation on the prices of Moxen/Lotus (my guess is Moxen avg 50--Pearl 35, Sapphire 70, and Lotus at $125)
One thing about it. If you want power to play with, I would certainly get it. There is virtually zero chance of this set coming back.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I expect it will be widely available for a short while, but then available in short bursts for some time.
WotC will want both a 'you really should buy this now' aspect to the set from making it a limited time initial release, but also an opportunity to profit from the set in future too.

This really depends on distribution of them because
each pack will contain the following:
10 commons
3 uncommons
1 rare or mythic rare
1 premium foil card (any rarity, including the extremely rare premium foil Power Nine card), OR 1 Power Nine card.
So the "foil" slot can also be a normal P9. How often this occurs will contribute to the P9 prices significantly. The fact that they are restricted is likely to limit price - at least in the short term.
It's hard to say whether the cards that are getting opened in the out of print drafts will be cheaper at that time period, than when the vintage masters set comes out. The comparison you can make is modern masters, but that set had cards that are used for a ptq season as well as the modern decks aren't as expensive. So who knows if oath is better to buy now or to wait for it to be drafted in Vintage Masters.
The best time to buy cards that weren't in recent out of print drafts would be during the vintage masters time period.
The best time to buy a card that wasn't in a recent OOP draft nor released in vintage masters would be right as they announce the set list (see noble hierarch, scapeshift, and fulminator mage as examples from MMA, they are modern playable cards yet weren't released in MMA so they went up after the MMA set list was finalized).
One thing about it. If you want power to play with, I would certainly get it. There is virtually zero chance of this set coming back.
It seems pretty dumb for them to only release this product for 1 time period. If they want vintage to have a decent player base they'll probably have vintage masters come back in 12 months.

There is virtually zero chance of this statement being true, at least as far as the power is concerned (i.e. power will probably come back in a different set). If there is demand, they will bring it back. If there is no demand, there is no reason to rush out to get these cards because they will be readily available. WotC has shown time and again that they are willing to re-release old cards/sets on MTGO. I'm not sure why this case would be any different if they stand to make a buck. Unless you have insider information from a contact at WotC, I don't see that the evidence supports your assertion.

Actually thinking about it, there's another thing they could do. Have Vintage Masters be tweaked from time to time, just like Cube is.
The first release might be missing Jace the Mind Sculptor but have most of the other Vintage and Legacy relevant cards; then in six months they might add JtMS but remove a different mythic such as Phyrexian Dreadnaught, and change 60 lower rarity cards to overhaul the limited environment.
Personally I am socking up the cash I would normally spend on non-standard cards because I am expecting Power to be the most expensive cards on MTGO just because people are greedy and people will pay. IMO power will never be priced based on normal market conditions.

Don't worry. I'm planning to get it. My goal is one day to have a god account, and as MTGOTraders can attest, I'm well on my way...

Better off massing Modern fetches.
Not if you want to play Vintage....
