I don't follow formats other than Standard where Monastery Mentor doesn't seem to be getting any play. Is it getting play elsewhere? What is keeping its value up?

"Because we cannot prevent draws in paper Magic we allow IDs. If we could prevent draws we would not have IDs in paper Magic. " Scott Larabee.
What does this mean for its future value? Does that mean it is more likely to keep its value through its life in Standard? Or, will it drop over the next year and then slowly rise after it rotates? I mean in general for a card that gets play in non-rotating formats but not as much in Standard. Not asking for a guarantee about Monastery Mentor.

Depends on how popular the set ends up being.... but right now there are not a lot of rares worth cracking a pack for... and the set had a shorter period in the limelight than usual (dragons came out fast)... so I'd wager the set is not going to be as opened as usual... which is good for his value retention. I'd wager he holds pretty well through standard and doesn't see much of a dip on rotation if his demand is mainly from eternal formats.
That's freakin' insane how heavily the prices are skewed towards the mythics. Was dragons maze even that bad?
Dragon's Maze was worse. At least we have a rare cracking the top five, and the balance is better - after Voice and Ral, the rest of the set fell to $10 or lower real fast.

It's hilarious now. Voice is pushing $20, Ral Zarek can be had for $5, and the 3rd most valuable card in the set is the goddamn Elemental Token for Voice.
There are some casual goldmines in there though and it wouldn't surprise me if some of those nutty cards like Deadbridge Chant, Progenitor Mimic, and Master of Cruelties shoot up.
This set doesn't feel like it's quite the EDH-Only set that DM was and the value is distributed a little more evenly even if it is pretty crappy.
I'd like to ask about Tasigur. What's the deal with him? Is he a standard card or a Modern card? He's pretty high for "just" a rare; he competes with the lower-end fetches, and the foils are outrageous. Wondering if I should just jump now, or keep waiting. I feel like it really can't go up, but I could be wrong.

Tasigur is only going to get better as time goes on. He is ticking down for now, but will shoot up once Magic Origins is drafted.
I don't wholly disagree with your assessment, as Tasigur is certainly a very efficient / powerful card. However, I am curious how much it hurts him that he's not exactly a auto-four-of in the decks that want him. I certainly see him being played as a mid-game threat in Standard/Modern, but I just don't see a deck that wants to jam 4 copies of him. His being a rare and generally a 2-3 of make me suspicious that he will maintain $8+ long-term; Siege Rhino is a 4-of in Standard and many Modern decks and even that card is only $7-8.
I do think he's a long-term buy, but I'm less interested at $8 than I am at $5-6.

Everybody wants to play control. Everybody wants to resolve him and take over the game.
No matter what I said about this set in the past I'm totally sold on it now. Best small set for a long time.
Most of those cards on top of the tally are great. The one I don't really get is Brutal Hordechief. How is this a thing? I see heaps more Warden of the First Tree around in Abzan aggro decks at streamed tournaments, no Hordechief. Perhaps warrior tribal is a popular FNM deck.
Master Warcraft type effects are things people think are good, want to try them out, and always realize that they're *****. This guy looks like he would lead to one sided wraths, unblocked combat phases, and general scariness, but in all likelihood never will.

Perhaps I am proving your point, but I think with all that going for him that he will find his time. Warrior tribal is very nearly a thing, and probably is a thing in more casual games.
