When I go to my flgs I usually buy something to support the store. If I haven't ordered any singles I buy a booster or two.
What set of recent ones have most value?
To me it seems to be Aether Revolt because it has fatal push at uncommon, Walking Ballista at rare and Heart of Kiran/Paradox engine (kinda bad mythics from value perspective) at mythic. The value is spread around the slots so you get blessed by jesus and pull all the things from a single booster. It's also a small set so pulling specific cards is easier.
Aether Revolt is actually the worst EV set in Standard that isn't about to rotate IIRC. There's a very good value uncommon, but the number of rares and mythics worth over a pack is the lowest of any Standard set. It's especially torpedoed by the fact that the Mythic slot is really underwhelming.
Interestingly, the top EV at the moment seems to be Kaladesh. With Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Torrential Gearhulk, Verduous Gearhulk, and Angel of Invention are some of the top lynchpin Mythics in the format, and the decks they're central to aren't losing much on rotation. The enemy fastlands form a cycle at rare worth over a pack a piece, and it even has Aether Hub as a reasonably valuable uncommon. Additionally, the Kaladesh Inventions are more valuable than the Aether Revolt ones by about a third, and closer to twice the expected value of either Amonkhet set Invocations.

Really? I would have thought Push alone would make Aether Revolt better because it's in the top 10 most expensive cards among Revolt and Kaladesh and it's an uncommon.
Chandra, Torch of Defiance @ 32,73
Torrential Gearhulk @ 15,39
Walking Ballista @ 12,78
Spirebluff Canal @ 8,56
Heart of Kiran @ 7,14
Fatal Push @ 7,05
Blooming Marsh @ 5,90
Verdurous Gearhulk @ 5,67
Metallic Mimic @ 5,21
Paradox Engine @ 4,64
Sure Chandra is really good but banking on pulling specific mythic seems like a long shot.
Although I note that you're using MCM as a reference, so are you in Europe? The market might be slightly different. That said, read the article for a better breakdown of "which set is best" than I could give in a few lines.
