I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct place to post about this topic. So, I'm planning to buy my first ever booster box because I want to experience what it's like to open 36 booster packs all at once.
I'm going within my budget of $90 and under, so the sets that I want to buy are
Return to Ravnica
Theros
Shadows Over Innistrad
The issue that I'm having is that I'm having hard time deciding which set I should purchase. Return to Ravnica and Theros have nice rares, but Shadows Over Innistrad is more of my play style; Shadows over Innistrad is $12 cheaper ($77 on TCG) too. Also, I'm not looking for return value from the booster box; just want the best all around set from the three, meaning which set has the better commons, uncommons, etc.
I just want to know what your thoughts and/or experiences are regarding these three sets.
What's your reason for telling me not to buy it? And I thought about Eldritch Moon since the set has more playable Modern cards, but Shadows Over Innistrad is just a better overall set for my kind of play style.
Well, here are some things to consider. If you want to go by your definition of best all around set with the best commons and uncommons, you may want to go with Return to Ravnica (RTR). RTR contains some incredibly strong cards that see play in alot of formats, such as the gates and the charms. There are even some good stand alone cards like Ultimate Price and Rogue's Passage.
However, if you want to go by your play style that is found in Shadows over Innistrad (SOI), then yes I would recommend that. I've had alot more experience with the cards found in SOI than RTR through drafts and I feel that the cards in SOI have greater synergy within the set, as opposed to RTR. Most of the cards in RTR are very two color specific and each guild runs very different strategies. SOI does contains different tribes but each color uses clues, delirium, and madness to some extent so you can more easily dabble in different colors. Plus SOI, like all the Innistrad sets, just drips with flavor and features very unique elements, such as werewolves and transformation cards!

Personally, I'd go with RTR, given your criteria.
Some up-front facts:
1) Buying a booster box to open it will almost definitely give you negative EV (that is to say, unless you're lucky, you'll lose money from doing so).
2) Opening a booster box all at once is a special kind of fun. I haven't done it in a while (haven't bought any boxes since my daughter was born), but fun is a very reasonable thing to expect out of buying a game.
3) RTR has solid value in the rare slot, as well as a lot of unique and useful cards at common and uncommon.
4) SOI will rotate out of standard relatively soon, so most of the cards will decrease in value.
So, since you want to do this thing, I'd say RTR now, and possibly SOI as well once it rotates out.
