With the major Ixalan leak yesterday, this would be a good time discuss how leaks so far ahead of time affect card prices?
In a regular rumor season, a keyword or card becomes revealed and some cards jump over night (look at Fluctuator when "cycle" was revealed to make a comeback).
But how does the market of prices become affected when the hype is stretched so long? A buy out might happen months ahead of the natural curve. By time the set is released, that hype may have already crawled to a halt.
What examples have we seen in the past when leaks came too early and what can be learned from the past?
I think that a fair amount of hype will remain until people see actual results post-release. I fully understand that a lot of grinders will start play testing as soon as something is spoiled, but there's a large segment of players out there who let the internet do all the work for them, and until they see tourney results, they will keep rolling the possibilities around.
Also, to a certain extent, I think prices won't deflate until a percentage of players have the cards in hand.
I think it's more likely that cards which normally have a post-release rise in value will make their climb earlier.
Also, I could be way off-base, as I'm more of a lurker than poster around here lately. Certainly no expert. I don't really recall any historical examples.
Public leaks are good for the game. It presents an equal playing field for everyone, preventing this cycle of insider trading we have been seeing with previous sets. While various old cards will eventually spike because of a new set. Everyone gets a chance to buy the cards at a reduced price instead of finding out that the old card they wanted had spiked "mysteriously" a few weeks before the official spoilers.
