I'm deciding whether I want to temporarily buy either cavern of souls or chalice of the void, and proxy whichever one I don't buy until its price falls in the future. But the problem is, they both have similar variables.
I can't really explain why chalice is around $40-$60 when it started at $7. I could surely reason that it is a viable sideboard against delver and other typical control decks, but that only really added like $15 to its value. I just can't see a reason for it to keep going up and up even more, being limited to legacy and modern, but at the same time, Jace, the Mind Sculptor started at like $15 and is still at $60 because of its use in legacy.
Similarly, cavern of souls has fallen out of standard, but still retains a high price. Both counterspells and stompy/tribal decks are common in both legacy and modern and will surely continue to be in the future. I am more inclined to think Cavern of Souls itself would rise in price because lands are much more versatile than a double x artifact, but based on WoTC history, they will probably print some new land that does "any mana" in the future as well, and it seems like chalice is becoming more common.
Both cards are becoming more common in legacy and modern and answer to common deck problems, but seeing as how that's now been established, it seems like there has to be a price cap somewhere in the near future if not already.
Chalice is currently high due to heavy modern play. Lots of the tier 1 decks use cheap 1 cmc spells/creatures like death shadow and chalice (as well as Explosive engineer) says no to those. It's a firm eternal staple now in the same vein as Liliana of the Veil or Tarmogoyf.

Yeah, I guess it will stay capped probably around where it is.
