I was thinking about mentioning each card in the appropriate thread, that jumped and ask the reasons for each one, but I think it be wise to condense all of the jumps into one thread to just review them.
Here's the cards that jumped (see the attached photo to see the before & after prices, as well as the percentile increase):
Please be sure to see the set that the jump was from. Some theories I have for a few of the jumps are:
- Some of the cards are on the reserved list
- Some are old, where their numbers are down (Antiquities Tron Lands for example)
- Sets w/ lower print runs, like Planeschase and Duel Decks
What struck me odd was the sheer amount of 50% increases and up. As a whole, 29 cards jumped 50% or more.
I haven't checked yet, but were any of the jumps from buyouts? Speculation targets? Mentioned in articles for a deck? Were heavily used in a PTQ/PT?
I'm just in awe about the market reflexive movement today.
Strikes me as someone looking to jump the prices of harder to find variants of casual/edh cards. I've kept an eye on the mtgstock daily charts and there has been a pattern of cards in supplemental sets like planechase and commander having an usually high price tag compared to the original printing. Maybe a person realized that it was sustainable because there was actual demand so they went ahead and bumped up the prices for similar cards.
A couple other cards seem to be spiking in response to not being in MM3 and are the new "bottleneck" cards that are required to complete decks.
edit: scratch that, the issue might be a software one with the system behind TCGplayer: Crystal Commerce. It went down taking a lot of stores offline so i'm assuming that screws with the numbers.
Additionally cards like fulminator mage and other cards not in MM3 have been gradually declining in supply from tcg player. On many of these this seems to be natural demand accompanied with the knowledge that they won't be re-printed making them obvious pick-ups or speculation targets. But yes it seems for the most part today was largely caused by system error.
I don't think there's any common thread here at all. Simple variance. Some days, not much jumps. Some days, a whole bunch of stuff jumps.
All of this stuff is just either 1) stuff that's been creeping for months now (and we see it show up again and again..looking at you Phyrexian Devourer or 2) old card speculation..either Reserved List or Old School 93/94, or both. (Hell, I picked up a few playsets myself several months ago.)
Lot of sizzle here, very little steak.
I check that site every single day and to be honest, the only 'completely new' thing I see here is probably Gravespawn Sovereign.
Ancient stirings, Fulminator Mage are modern staples not in MM17. (Rip Filminator.) Hardened scales have seen much love from Roguebrewer modern, and is a staple in frontier. The rest seem random.

I have dyslexia, no I am not going to spell check for you, yes you have to live with the horrors of it.

I would put money on this or something related to it. Crystal Commerce member site has been down for 20 hours when I post this. I'd guess either an automatic shift in pricing data as stores went down or opportunists relisting at higher prices when stocks disappeared. The alternative is a run of casual coin flip players suddenly making a run on 5ED Game of Chaos, which seems unlikely at best, or speculators trying to corner the market on that card, which seems even less likely. I wouldn't trust automatically generated pricing data for a day or two until there's more information about that.
That said, a couple of those are probably actual demand, at least in part. That list includes some modern playable stuff not showing up in MM17 like Fulminator Mage and Ancient Stirrings, and Hardened Scales has gotten some attention as part of a BG artifact list (same reason for the jump in Rite of Passage).
