Hey guys, i'll try to keep it short. I just got sick of standard, really hate the rotation and constant devaluation of cards. So i got into modern, built an Elves deck and a Spirits deck. My goal is to get as many modern staples as i can so i can build any deck by buying into the most expensive cards, or just to trade or play with friends. I already have playsets of KoT fetches and RtR shocks. Also got cantrips and some counters, but then i started hesitating with cards like Path to exile.
So now i want to ask you guys, when should i get staples? For example, i bought a playset of Remand because it was just printed in MM15 and it's unlikely to be reprinted in Standard. I'm only trading into Paths because i think it's pretty obvious they'll get reprinted in MM17 (it's a widely used uncommon sitting at 12 bucks), but almost impossible to be reprinted in Standard, so i'll wait. Serum Visions just got reprinted so it's a perfect time to buy into. As for the Zendikar fetches, most people think they'll get reprinted in Standard so they get the same treatment as the Onslaught fetches.
I'll appreciate any help and maybe the info will be useful to many other people i hope!

I think that you have the right idea by waiting until right after a reprint. If you're okay waiting, eventually everything that you want will be reprinted (that was kind of the point of Modern).
I don't think that there's much in the way of further advice that we can offer.

Along with many mods, I've moved shop over to MTGNexus. Come check us out!
Besides that do not try to get 'every card you can' instead try to get a spesific deck. I would reccomend UW spirits a a very budget firendly and competetive deck at the moment.

I have dyslexia, no I am not going to spell check for you, yes you have to live with the horrors of it.
So you have elves, spirits, allied fetches, RTR shocks. Move into a natural growth of your base...
Elves paves the ground for combo elves
Your mana base gives you a lot the expensive pieces of infect already (aside from inkmoth)
UW spirits paves the ground for bant spirits with noble heirarchs which you need for infect already.
You have lots of the guts/mana for bant eldrazi if you kept your OGW and BFZ eldrazi junk. Path is just a strong pick up period. This is where you start trading and sniping those good white hard cards for sideboarding.
Buy a playset of anything sub $2 that's played at uncommon for any color (lightning bolt and such).
Then move the heavy hitters like goyf, snapcaster, etc. if you're ready to take that step and commit to a deck that they shine in.
Pick up reprints and good buys/trades as they come along for anything if you can swing it. A 5th polluted delta may be a trade haven in 2-4 years.
Eventually when you move into red you can quickly access jeskai nahiri if you kept them from playing standard as you have everything but the tarns and emrakul probably.
Eventually when you move into black you'll have plenty of Abzan coco's meat already and really just need the enemy colored fetches and some cheaper black cards.
With maybe a few hundred bucks you'll have the meat of aggro (elves), combo (infect, combo elves, reliquary retreat), midrange (bant eldrazi), and tempo (spirits); all while building a strong foundation to jump into control eventually. These are all viable from FNM to GP level decks with a good swath of play styles. I'm. It saying you'll have 100% stock lists with every sideboard slot, but making a list that steps off where your collection ends will help you prioritize. Acquire cards that complement your collection and play a deck you enjoy.
I would personally avoid the expensive T1 decks that don't cleanly port into other archetypes at first, like TRON or fish. So much of these decks aren't applicable to other strats because of the nature of the deck.
Don't start with jund...it's pretty expensive. I've followed the above path for the last 3-4 years and I'm in a position of being about 2-3k short of finishing almost all the popular decks for the format minus a handful of cards that will eventually get a reprint...and a ton of that is sitting in costs associated with goyf, a fourth LotV, ancestral vision, etc. the super expensive cards that don't auto slot into things of that color.
Best of luck!

Here's an Mtggolfish list for reference: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/format-staples/modern/full/all

Reality is only what man allows it to be. Few shape it so that many may accept it.
Don't neglect Commander 2016 as a source of possible reprints. You never know what those wacky Wizards are going to print.

Now move into reliquary retreat by grabbing some birds of paradise and knight of the reliquary for a funsies deck that will now cost a reasonable amount.
