Prices are already being seen. Puca Trade has given some of the cards spoiled non-generic price tags (25 pp's common, 200 pp's uncommon, 500 pp's rare, 1000 pp's mythic).
(When referencing Puca Trade, I want this to be viewed as a 1 point to dollar/cents comparison, w/o anyone telling me "But a Puca Point is 70% of a cent... for now I am treating this as an apples to apples comparison).
So far, to me, these are worth mentioning:
Brain in a Jar: ~$2.00
Geralf's Masterpiece: ~$3.50
Mindwrack Demon: ~$4.00
Relentless Dead: ~$16.00
That's Star City Games, but they aren't the trend-setters, the be-all prices. Where do we speculate these prices going? This thread is for price speculations, not current prices.
So you'd rather have speculation or rumors of card prices, rather than actual card prices? Granted, they're SCG so they'll trend higher, but why anyone wants "rumors" instead of actual's is beyond me. And why would you say Puca's prices are somehow speculative, but not SCG. Puca bases their prices largely on TCGP, you know, which is basically a store. This is a speculation thread, but you want a source for rumors or speculation? There's prob a reason there were no other replies in this thread...

Well, I took down the "sources" thought. Puca Trade is not always on par, early on they get their prices from other sources.
I am curious to know what cards others think will be big hitters. I mentioned PT because, for me, it was only source of prices. I did not know SCG had prices up. I'd like to hear others thoughts on cards as they are previewed.
Eerie Interlude at three bucks is pretty sweet value.
Duel deck printing does some work on that one, especially with GoST as one of the face cards.
There's no way Thing in the Ice can maintain anything close to it's preorder prices. Regular rare, even a DFC, would have to see an immense amount of play to stay that high, and (correct me if I'm wrong) standard doesn't have the kinds of cheap instants and sorceries decks to support it most seasons. I could see it at $10 if it finds a standard home, but it drops to $6 if it's just legacy/modern players after it.
It's funny that SCG preorder for Mindwrack Demon is cheaper than PT, at least as of the last time I looked.
Nothing else really jumps out at me yet.

I think the main driving factor of Thing's price are eternal formats. That said there's no way it will sustain that price being a rare in whats probably going to be the most opened set in history.
And yeah, I would've guessed that she'd be a $10-$15 presale and would drop to $5 within 3 months. I'm pretty shocked that anyone is paying this much for her.

About 20 seems right for presale. I assume she's going to settle around 10-15 for most of her stay in Standard. She's quite powerful and I expect her to see a decent amount of play.
i really want to try to get myself on some thing in ice?
anyone know what its a good range to pay for this bad boy?
Wait for a couple of months after release. Rares have to see a ton of standard play to keep the kind of price that it's preordering for, and standard typically doesn't have the instant and sorcery support that Thing needs. It's mostly a modern and legacy card. Even though it's getting a lot of buzz there, this set is likely to be heavily opened and supply is going to outstrip demand relatively quickly. I see Thing as topping out at $6ish long term, contingent on it not seeing much standard play, but I would be alright paying $10 if I was going to use it sooner in legacy or modern.
There's also a chance that it goes nowhere in any format and the price tanks hard, but there's enough interest in finding a way to use it that it would take a while to fall in price even if that were the case.

It's very rare to get a good deal on anything before the actual release date.
Everybody is scrambling to buy all the cool stuff they want to play with at the first FNM in an effort to brag about how they found it before the pros did when whatever it might be sees plays at the Pro Tour.
That's not to say never speculate. That would be crazy.
If this new set doesn't have fetchlands or expeditions there's nothing to deflate values. If you see something you like for a low price scoop up a playset. I'd rather pay $40 for a planeswalker that is going to be absolute gas than $20 for one that could be worth $5 in a few weeks.
I don't understand why so many people are saying Expos are deflating card prices. Heck most high dollar cards were only pennies to a couple of bucks.
Wait, not following. Please follow up with more details. I ask because I do not know why you have mentioned this in this thread?

I'm sorry I don't follow the discussion. If you have a specific inquiry relating to my post you'll have to be more clear and I will respond. "High dollar cards" and "couple of bucks" are contradictory terms.
I'm mixed on anguished unmaking; it certainly is a powerful card, but three life is actually a pretty high price for removal. It is interesting to compare to utter end in that more controlling decks would prefer end, but more aggressive decks might prefer unmaking. It'll probably see some play in standard, but I bet it will be relegated to maybe 1-2 MD for decks that really want the effect and probably some SB play (sorta like End). As for modern, the decks that could use it probably have better options ("control" doesn't want to spend life on this effect and midrange will likely involve green, opening up abrupt decay and maelstrom pulse). Moreover, being a gameday top 8 promo will count for something, so it will probably be about a $5 card, unless something changes. I bet declaration in stone(a card with its own problems) will see more play overall.

I think the general idea is that, if a set contains something (like fetches or expeds) that will drive demand regardless of the other stuff, a lot of the set will be opened in order to get those cards. As a result, things that aren't those cards will be in large supply, thus driving prices down for the set outside of chase cards. Look at Khans--the set has a relatively high power level and very few cards kept value despite being played. It is a trend one can see as far back as the original zendikar block (maybe before), where some price suppression occurred (during the block's time in standard). SOI, at this point, is unlikely to have a similar hook, so rare and mythic prices might hold up a bit better than in other, relatively recent sets.

edit: new white / red planeswalker?
should see a lot of play huh?
maybe work buying into?
Anguished Unmaking (spec price $10.00 - a Vindicate, instant speed)
Nahiri, the Harbinger (spec price $15, settling around $10)
I do not trust Star City Games, so this is my spec & not their ideal prices.
but losing 3 life seems pretty steep!

Yeah, it is, but in the right build, life gain, 3 life is an expendable resource.
