I have a fairly high value collection (a completed 720 card cube with all the high value cards like tarmogoyf and ~20 expeditions), a complete set of collector's edition, and a decent amount of sealed product (8 FTV 20, 4 KTK complete sets), and I'm looking for the best way to sell off my collection. My interest in magic has been waning and I don't have time to play it anymore, so I'm looking to unload my collection for a good amount of money. I'm going to GP DC with some friends, but that's the last major event I'm going to attend.
I'm not looking to make this a drawn out process; I don't want to go to the post office 100 times. Would I get the best return by selling my collection at GP DC, selling to a local store, selling to an online buylist, or is there another better option?
I would definitely take the high value stuff to DC and sell there. It will likely be multiple sales, but all in one place, then list what is left on Ebay. You will lose value there, but it is 'fast, most value, least work, choose 2' when you are dealing with that much money

On VERY rare occasions, I have seen shops sell collections on consignment. Might be worth making calls around. They'll take a percentage; but so does Ebay and Paypal. See if you can negotiate the equivalent percentage as Ebay and Paypal combined. It may be a slow sell, but all of the cards will be in one place where you do not have to worry about shipping cards at all.
Your question worded another way is: How much money do you want to leave on the table?
Taking the time to sell things is obviously going to get your more money selling it all right away.
In my experience:
Ebay nets you the highest price, but it could take months to a year + many trips to the post office.
Online buylists are the same way.
Stores, especially local game shops will net you the LEAST amount of money. But your local game shop is obviously not mine. Still though, there is something beneficial to be said about supporting them. I.e. selling to them, leaving money on the table, and knowing they are going to use those profits to pay the rent...literally.
Selling at a GP is a crap shoot. Depends on who you meet, but it's the fastest. However for me, I'm always willing to accept less in person in cash because of the convenience factor.
You can always try looking towards your friends if any of them are active traders or sellers. Having them sell it off for you in pieces while taking a percentage could end up being more profitable to you for the least amount of effort.

Speaking of friends, I would see if they want to buy anything first at buylist prices. That way you get money, and your friends get a good deal on some cards.

I'm not in a hurry to sell my collection, my main limiting factor is effort. I don't want to turn selling this collection into a part-time job!
I guess of the choose 2 I would want "most money, least effort" without worrying about time. Is there a better way to make that happen?
