i have a few (around 100) bulk rares lying around, mostly from Khans onward.
this week i am going to a gp, and thought about getting rid of them, since they are mostly really useless cards (like Meandering Towershell, Hedonist's Trove) or just janky stuff (Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper, Flying Crane Technique).
i usually keep all the cards i come across from draft/prize, but there are some for which i just see no hope of getting rid, not even by puca or direct mail trading.
last year i asked a vendor about trading in bulk rares, and they told me, that they offer about 0.18$ for each card, which seems ok for these cards.
any experience on this? if vendors are taking bulk rares, do they take absolutely anything at the minimum price or i will never get rid of my Meandering Towershells and Prism Arrays?
18 cents for buying your bulk is a great deal. Usually you get 10 - 15 cents.
Just for what it is worth I don't think selling your bulk is ever really worth it. Carrying a fair amount of bulk myself you will be surprised at how bulk can carry a collection. The demand for good casual cards are the main driving force for getting cards expensive 90 percent of the time. It only takes you 25 cents cards to spike to 50 cents to make a hundred percent profit. Also people never feel ripped off by buying 50 cent rares.
It is also a zero risk investment. You can buy a 1000 bulk rares for 150 bucks from SCg and make your own 50 cent bargain bin. Then you actually only have to sell 30 percent of those cards to break even. If you do you can actually still have a whopping 700 rares to enjoy. If you are fed up with all this bulk you can just go to a GP and still get 10 - 15 cents for your other 700 rares.
That is not to mention when a modern card you get in a bulk deal actually blows up and your bulk rare that you paid 15 cents for actually is worth a few dollars. It is rare that this happens but it does on occasions happen. Modern being what it is getting a fair amount of modern bulk is great. You never know when the volatile modern market blows something that was cheap up in price.
Catering to the casuals is one of the more niche ways to get ahead in MTG finance I think. It is suited to people like myself who just enjoy having a lot of magic cards.
thank for the thought.
i also specifically mentioned REALLY useless cards, that haze zero chance of spiking.
the thing is, i trade exclusively on puca or deckbox (or of course personally), no ebay, or selling individual cards anywhere, so mass bulk rare offers here.
All I can say to you is people assured me that I was an idiot for buying 50 cent Greater Auramancy and look at me now busy trading the playset I have of those for two Snapcaster Mages. You really cannot say that any casual type cards has zero chance of spiking. You have no idea of what they may print in the future that may make older cards good.
yeah, but a 2 CMC enchantment, that on it's on is solid, is on a sudden shortage due to Daxos the Returned deck, and was printed in Shadowmoor (i don't know how many packs of that set were opened, but i'm sure the playerbase was smaller than now), vs 5+ CMC creatures/enchanments, that were opened to oblivion and have no real impact on any format
and btw, gratz on the trade you got there
I guess the point here (but not a point you're interested in this thread) is that time says what's bulk and not. Stony Silence was a $0.25 rare on Innistrad's rotating. If you are intent at getting rid of bulk rares, $0.18 cash is a pretty good rate.
