I purchased this Nykthos online, however when it arrived it immediately stuck out from the others that I have. It is much more pale than a regular one, and it is also not very glossy. I'm not sure why someone would make a fake Nykthos... Could this one just be faded from exposure to sunlight?
The Nykthos in question is the bottom one. I included a regular one on top for reference.
Nykthos was in a clash pack ( i think the first) so i wouldnt be surprised if this is a result of that fact. This is because they are thought to be separate print runs and are physically different sometimes (similar to zendikar verdant catacombs.)
Please, everyone, stop the witch hunt for fakes. Yes, fakes exist. They're also easy to spot. Printing differences exist too, especially for cards printed in event decks.

Any Puca trades you can send me would be greatly appreciated! Big want list and lots of points available.
Nykthos hasn't been on any of the chinese fake lists, so it's most likely real card. Color depth changes happen when ink runs low or some other setting on the press is off. Also the Clash pack copies are printed at different printer, so they do differ a bit.
There has so far been 6 fake printings and all the lists are findable using a google search. There's also a subforum for authenticity questions, but as others have mentioned this is most likely a real card, altough the photos are way too low resolution to actually tell for certain. You need a good quality scan and then host it somewhere (as it's several MB in size and the usual suspects limit the file sizes to save bandwith).
Cheaper cards have been faked and sold. You would be surprised.
Yes - if you've seen a fake that looks as good as the one in question on this thread, and replicating a less-valuable card, I'd be very surprised. Not saying no one is doing it, but their losing money on the effort if so... it costs almost $3 just to reliably ship a card these days.
If it just looks faded and crappy, it's probably real. The counterfeiters have tighter QC than Wizards of the Coast these days: it's just that their fakes have aberrant kerning and funny-looking expansion and copyright symbols and stuff.

These days, some wizards are finding they have a little too much deck left at the end of their $$$.

The card in this thread isn't fake, so it's not possible to see one that is "as good as the one in question." But, if you want to talk about top-quality fakes, they do exist in nearly every card. A lot of the time, they're sold in packages that include basic lands, cheaper rares, and the more expensive staples. You're right that most major vendors probably wouldn't risk shipping a cheap fake, but they do get around via trades.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it....
