The price of Fatcaster Mage is kind of surprising seeing as it's not going to be a 4 of card in most decks.
The better question is if the card's busted ability to replay instants will mean that quality instants printed while Torrential Gearhulk is in standard will be few and far between...?
Torrential gearhulk shouldn't limit good instants like snapcaster limited good instants/sorceries. It could though, depends on how R&D feels about the card.
Median on blue gearhulk is back down to 30 with low at just under 20, but it should drop as more product is opened.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Haha I just bought 2 playsets last night and they shipped today before the buyout. Someone listened to Quiet Speculation and Fast Finance and bought them out.

This was actual demand, not a buyout. It's due to Felidar Guardian being spoiled.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
I don't think it's an issue - it's a rather janky combo with no synergistic backup plan. If there is a deck that happens to use those components and the combo is icing on the cake, then I could believe it would have an effect on standard. As it is, this smells like Tier 2 jank.
This new set is interesting, but the preorders are even more interesting to me. No white hot cards - the most expensive single is $12. I think more action is likely with Standard cards from prior sets. Black looks very strong - I could see more Liliana action in the future. It's $30 on tcgplayer, but at GP Louisville the cheapest I could find was $38. Everyone was also targeting Collective Brutality like crazy - maybe it was the Legacy environment, but SCG had theirs for $9/each. Vendors were buying @ 4.
Besides interesting, this new set *has* to shake up standard. I only have anecdotal evidence, but standard participation is way down locally. People hate the stale format. If this set doesn't make standard more appealing, we're in for a looooooooooooooong year.

My local standard attendance has been way down too. We would fire with 40+ for FNM in Theros days, now we're lucky to get 16. It's so bad that we started up a Frontier event at FNM.
On the topic of pre-orders, I got 2 playsets of the 4/3 for 2 mana. I'm expecting that to be he Goyf of Frontier. It's just way too efficient not to see significant play. Plus they're about $1.50 each, so even if it's a miss, not very much lost.
There's also a lot of good stuff in this set for artifact EDH like scrap trawler. May not be super hot for standard but there's some long term inevitability there.
I'm targeting Rishkar to make a splesh somewhere in standard. There's a lot of +1/+1 counters being thrown on these cards. Just feel like it's too much of an enabler to sit at $2.97 for long.

I don't see why. Jeskai Control was already a fairly established deck. Making people respect a potential combo win on T4 or T6 seems pretty strong when you're also perfectly content to play the long game as well. This definitely feels like a Tier 1 deck to me, possibly even the new deck to beat.
How does Jeskai Control synergize with that combo? Saheeli Rai and Felidar Guardian are do nothings without each other. They would just be another finisher in that respect, but Torrential Gearhulk and Avacyn are flash and capable of finishing out the game already.
They would be a significantly better finisher. There's a very large difference between a Torrential Gearhulk and being able to win from basically any board state. And it's not like Saheeli Rai is terrible on her own; she filters your draws and can clone a Gearhulk when necessary. Not to mention the life she gains against aggro decks that are literally forced to kill her (if they can) because they might die on the next turn to infinite cats.
I guess time will tell which of us is right, but I fully expect some version of Jeskai control playing this combo to be a major player in Standard. If I wasn't already commited to a deck for the next 2 years (Aetherflux Reservoir storm for life!) I would definitely be working on Jeskai Cat Twin or whatever silly name we come up with for this deck.
B|00m,if you're tracking, please keep an eye on Emrakul's drop too. Thanks.
Oh, I'm always watching...
I've had an eye on Emmy too, as I'd love one for my cube, but it's barely moved yet. It was somewhere between $19.50 and $20 before the banning, and it's only fallen to $18.50 so far. I hope it'll keep falling (for purely selfish reasons).

I guess thats what happens when you reprint Splinter Twin in standard. Yucko!

So this happened, in case people are wondering why Copter's down and PWs are up.
Other than Saheeli Rai, what PWs are up?
Sorry Cap, those were predictions and not observations. Didn't mean to confuse anyone.
I do expect Dovin Baan to see more play. He seems quite good, and without Copter around he gets a lot better.
