The barrier to testing cards for a format? Please...
The barrier to entry is being able to afford cards to play a format, not just test it. People can and do play all-in decks. Tasigur might be a better choice for Eldritch Evolution but why not play both? The people who actually want the cards to play with are paying higher prices because of people doing buyouts to rapidly raise the price.
This might be an unpopular opinion but if a newer player who just started out and has limited budget were to decide that the best first Modern deck for him is an Allosaurus Rider Evolution combo jank and started complainig that the pieces for it are getting speculated out of his reach then I wouldn't say the card's price is the problem here.
Keep in mind that there are very real concerns regarding speculating on staples in the format, but this ain't one.
On the other hand, the whole premise of speculating on this card expecting demand is just silly. Anyone who knows the format and has played in it knows that it will never take off. It's a novelty item and nothing more. Maybe do some foils for the people who fancy it, but it will never have real tournament demand.
I'm really troubled by Aether Vial. I think it would really improve my deck, and it's a sweet card, but at the same time 40$ for a single vial not to mention $160 for a playset is a lot of money spent on cardstock. I'm pretty conservative with spending, being a student. Is it a good buy, should I invest?

Do you play Modern competitively? Frequently? If so, then yes, it's a good buy. It will improve your deck (hatebears, fish, something similar?). It's probably too powerful for Standard (although I certainly can't rule out Development wanting to try to curb the power of Eldrazi for a few months before rotation and sticking it in Aether Revolt), so the likely reprint is not sooner than the postulated Modern Masters 2017: What Are We Mastering Now? Check out Spellskite from MM2 - It's a card that sees a ton of play and the reprint didn't really do anything to the price. You're probably safe investing in a playset to power up your Modern deck.
If you don't play frequently, or if you don't play competitively, then maybe you can think about other ways to spend $160, but if you play and there's prize support then you're leaving money on the table by playing a sub-optimal deck.

Along with many mods, I've moved shop over to MTGNexus. Come check us out!
BBE is apparently Modern legal on the MTGO beta, which is fueling speculation it might be seeing an unban. This is causing foils in particular to jump at the present. NM foils sold out almost everywhere, some remain on tcg but are rising quickly.

I heard this too. I also replied about this very thing on the Modern Forum here, but some said it was concluded to be a rumor. Another person here said that Mox Opal was concluded to be out at the Beta Client before, so they won't believe it until they see it. Still, I can definitely see how even the slightest rumor could fuel panic buying.
I myself told people after the Ancestral Vision/Sword of the Meek unban that Bloodbraid Elf would be next at some later date. We'll see. Ebay looks to be sold out nearly, but the prices don't seem to have moved too much. Maybe it's coming...

It might have been fixed to reflect its current legality, or it might have been fixed because it is supposed to be banned. But I think there are plenty of dumb things you can do in Modern these days, and BBE is not the worst of them anymore. Bitterblossom used to be THE bogeyman and now it's just another fine card. So I'm holding out hope, but if not the FNM promos I'm holding are still pretty cool.

Sorry for the doublepost, but an update on BBE- it seems no one got the memo on the patch to MOTL that re-banned it, or else people are choosing to believe that they're still intending to unban it and just chose to path the client in the meantime, because TCGPlayer is all out of promos at $10ish, and only three copies remain from $18-$30. The ship has sailed on these if there was a ship to begin with. Guess we'll see in Sept.

considering the price of spellskite doubled in december 2015, it could have gone to $60-80 if not for the reprint.

It's actually pretty good in the current meta, but the real reason for the price bump is that Bant Eldrazi plays 3-4 in the SB. It basically is their Enchantment/Artifact removal and much, much more.

Just checking casually on tcgplayer, looks like IoK is back above 9.00 for all printings (low, nm, shipped). Guess that price dip from the reprint didn't last very long. (I saw them at $6 earlier in the week). I see them back above $10 soon, they really should have printed it as an uncommon instead of a rare.

That's still a sizeable dip from the $15+ it was at before the reprint.

I've been hearing that Modern is going to be removed from GPs/Pro Tours, if this is in fact true do you think prices for Modern cards will drop?
What are you throughts?
Thanks
Modern has already been removed from the pro tour, but I haven't heard of any plans to remove it from the GP rotation. The largest impact is probably making prices a little more stable.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
I need to get a hold of some cash so I am ready to do what I have told others not to do- sell some high value Modern staples. I just don't play much right now and have not played anything other than casually in several months. I am wondering about the best way to do this as a person who has little to no history as a seller on both Ebay and TCG. I want to get much better than buy list, so that means I need to sell them directly. I have an ebay account, though it has been several years since I sold anything and don't have that many sales to begin with. Frankly I have been a little leery of using them due to fear of a charge back. I have never used TCG to sell cards, so there is no history to give potential buyers confidence that I am trustworthy and selling genuine product. To make things more complicated mine are authentic (I pulled all of them from sealed product), but these are all cards that I have seen in counterfeit lots (LotV, Verdant Catacombs, and Arid Mesa). I will probably end up getting well below TCG market price for them due to my lack of history, but as long as I get well above buy list I am fine with it.

Thanks. I went TCG and sold 1 Engineered Explosives, 4 Verdant Catacombs and a LotV pretty quickly even though I had no sales yet. They went for a couple dollars below TCG market price. The fees are steeper than I'd like, but I am still getting over TCG low in cash in the end.
It was easier than I thought. Just got another sale for Arid Mesa.
It's a pretty land. As I know, from personal experience, eventually you go looking for multiple copies of your favorite basics, particularly if you maintain a bunch of casual / EDH decks. If you want all the lands in your deck to match, you need to buy em 20 at a pop.
