So with the advent of KTK, WOTC has decided to go wide in terms of prerelease foils. Instead of everyone getting the same unplayable* thing, or one of five playable options, there is now a plethora of prerelease cards, which has pushed their prices pretty close to pack foils. My question is (as the thread title reflects), which version has better long-term potential, and why? I suspect that the answer will end up being "because this is the version that EDH players want more", but that's sort of cyclical.
*Obviously, I'm talking about in the event itself. I don't think that anyone is calling Emrakul or Wurmcoil unplayable.

I could see this going either way which is why I selected it depends on the card. I think it's too early to tell if people are going to prefer the date stamps or not... I kind of like them myself but I also don't worry about foils and will get the cheaper non foil cards.
Currently though the answer is definitely pack foil.
It really depends on which is more common, and it's really hard to say without doing the math (which I won't do). There's a certain guarantee that 1 out of every X prerelease boxes with contain a promo dig through time, while it takes dozens of boxes to 'randomly' pull one. A store only receives so many prereleases boxes, so they could actually be rarer than a pack foil. Again, I didn't do the math, so I don't know.
Some people think that pack foils have a certain amount of prestige over something that you can get out of a box as a guarantee pull, and I tend to agree, but only to an extent. But, on the other hand, with promos like this, I suspect the price will normalize as people buy the 'cheap' shiny promo versions which are identical to the real thing except for some gold text, unlike FTV jace which is an abomination.

That's exactly the sort of opinion that I'm trying to get; thank you. I think that the prerelease cards are in a weird place right now, and I'm trying to understand where that is, and where they'll end up.

I think it depends on the individual, and I think also that the cards will remain very similar in price. For my Cube, personally, I like the ones with the date stamped on them. However, I can't speak for all and know at least one other person with a Cube who refuses to play the ones with the date stamps. I think it's a crapshoot either way, really. I don't expect there to be a significant disparity in the price between the two without different art. I suppose you could use Wurmcoil Engine as a reference point? The promo has different art and a stamp and is $10 less. So if anything I'd say the stamped ones will slowly decrease in price compared to the others over time, but not significantly on cards that are only worth $10 as foils anyhow.
The new prerelease foils are actually significantly more rare than pack foils of the same card. I also believe they should hold the value better. They're a one-time burst and then they're strictly limited. And normal foils keep getting opened over months and come from redeemed MODO sets (which is actually a significant source of foils). There's also a significant portion of demand coming from collectors, I've sold plenty of low-end prerelease promos for a lot more than I'd ever be able to get for pack foils of those cards.
To me personally I like the promo foils way more since it's the same card with a date stamp on it that is way harder to find. I could have easily bought 4 set foil dig through times but I chose promo foil's because they were harder to find and I think way better in the long term than the pack. The pack foil is continuously opened as long as the set is in print. Promo foils are a one shot. On SCG some promo's are more than the pack foil and vice versa not sure how they determine it. Some are also the same like tasigur is 30 for both versions on SCG with almost the same amount in stock with them having 1 more promo foil than pack foil. On the low end cards like

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Possibly a bit of a rant but Wizards seems to be skimping on art recently due to the lack of new arts in MM15. I know artists cost money but there's only so much you can increase your profit margin by shaving 5-10 artworks per set.
WotC is paying at most 2 grand for a single piece of artwork. 2 grand means close to nothing to an operation of their scale. WotC is just has quite poor management. Alternate art can also suck hell most prerelease foils with alternate art in years past I really didn't like ajani vengeant promo being quite the stain to me.

Yeah you probably need to get a Steve Argyle special or it's not going to be much good anyway. I do think if they went the extra mile they'd make those prerelease cards special which would then lead to more interest in the events. I mean some fancy plastic dice doesn't do it for me, I'm a card gamer, not a dice gamer.
