sorin markov originally came out in the 2012 core set before he was in zendikar, right? because I was looking at the value of both, with the zendikar one being quite a bit more valuable. im just wondering where is the counter point between value of original set print vs I guess, (at least for this situation) non-core set print. of course im not talking about earlier sets; like alpha vs beta vs etc...
This link of sets & release dates - scroll down - might be useful. Zendikar was released in 2009 while M12 came out in 2011.
I believe the rule is generally originals hold value over reprints, but there are a few cases where a reprint has better art and might be more desirable. Dark Confidant may be one such example.
And there are a few examples of black bordered cards having better value than a white bordered card. Perhaps Lord of Atlantis Timeshifted vs. the 4th Edition. Probably not the best example since 4th wasn't the original printing of Lord of Atlantis.
Thanks, I should have clarified that most white bordered cards are reprints. I thought it might be useful to stray off point a little to note that within reprints, there can also be a value hierarchy.
Which I will follow up with wild conjecture. Look, the asking price for original printings tends to be higher. But in my experience, those cards don't move very frequently. I believe that sellers are generally unwilling to realize their loss by selling a card for less than it used to be worth. In some cases, I believe the asking price is not an indication of market value, but instead the price at which the cards will NOT sell.
So take any lesson that original printings are worth more with a grain of salt.
Thanks man. I've looked at the set listings on Wikipedia before; but this must have slip passed me. I just got back into the game since, like 2000. I think I just assumed that core sets could also have original planeswalker debuts. Although, less often, of course.

The address your original point, Sorin Markov was printed in Zendikar before M12. Most planeswalkers do first debut in expert sets, but M12, M13, and M14 have all had new versions of planeswalkers not printed before in an expert set.

White bordered cards are reprints, so chances are that more or less all original black boarder versions are more worth than the white border ones.
Except for P3K
Also to the OP, Judge Foils may tend to hold more value than original printings.
And 26 new cards in Starter 1999.
