I created this thread to hopefully keep information flowing through on fakes; and to keep us informed and up to date on what's happening. "MTG LION" on youtube has been posting a lot of videos concerning Chinese fakes and I am curious to what others think and have experienced.
Yeah, but is this a new batch, or is it still copies of stuff floating around from the last Chinese counterfeiter who lit the place up a few months ago?
idk what this is such an issue now. People think Magic cards are so unique. Every single collectible that gains any value has counterfeits. Baseball cards, comics, works of art. In no way are they killing the market. People still value a rare Rolex even though you can get counterfeits that are almost indistinguishable because they use real Rolex parts. People still value works of Art that are often counterfeit. Yet prices are only going up on that stuff. Don't think an Alpha Black Lotus or a Mickey Mantle rookie card is going to crash in price because some yahoos in china are running them off the printing press.
I've got some of the Chinese fakes, they're very easy to tell.
I'm pretty sure most of the fake foil action has been connected to Ryan O'Koren, the guy behind alteredprints, not any of the Chinese publishing companies.
That said, take most of what MTG Lion says with a grain of salt. The guy's a tool.

Why yes, I do think we need some random controversy trolled up in a thread that hasn't said anything about price crashes!
(P.S. We don't. Thread is a report on a new foil counterfeit, apparently, not a debate on the effect of fakes.)
I would think it would be difficult for a counterfeiter to make convincing fake foils, since normally foils are printed in two layers (some areas of the card are not as reflective). I could be wrong though. I have seen the MTG LION Video, but I haven't seen these cards.
You'd be surprised just how clueless people are. And there are many shops with inexpert employees who wouldn't think twice about accepting a counterfeit foil Jace. These forum participants have knowledge unlike many store retailers. It is quite ridiculous when they overlook foils and sell them at regular price; and this is just the tip of the iceberg. So I wouldn't be surprised if these started to surface in franchise stores with drones running around. Consider this.
