Suppose I have $100 to spend on cards right now. I play mostly Standard, and some Modern. The cards I need for decks are bloated BNG cards - I don't want to buy Brimaz or Kiora until they drop.
Where is the best place to sink the money?
- Buy 2 Fetchlands, and risk a reprint in Fall 2014?
- Buy Theros cards like Elspeth and Stormbreath Dragon that will see play and may rise over the next 1.5 years?
- Buy new BNG cards that may be underrated like Courser of Kruphix, and should rise.
- Buy other Modern staples that probably won't be reprinted, like Grove of the Burnwillows or Karn? Geist of Saint Traft?
- Sit on the money until my standard wants stabilize.
- Something else?
You did miss the boat on that one, it is lousy advice. I would selectively buy shocks as they get closer to rotation as they are near a lifetime low right now.
Since you don't want to buy the cards you say your decks "need", then you should sit on your money until you either have enough money (don't wait for a drop) or until you need other new cards for a new deck.

Identify your goal. Is your goal to a) profit on a MTG-related investment, or b) get you the cards that you need to play with?
If your goal is a), I'd buy into Theros block. Lots of supply at the moment. Grove, Geist, and Karn are known quantities, and you won't be able to get them at a serious discount, so any profit will be restricted to their rise, and since everyone is watching for them to rise ...
If your goal is b), I'd sit on the money until my wants stabilized, OR I'd try to find someone who has what I want, and try to find out what they want. I always try to keep in mind what other people around me are looking to pick up, so that if they get something that I want we can both win. One of my friends has a mono-B devotion deck, so I'm always looking for cards for that as well as for my decks, because she just got a Wooded Foothills in a random Onslaught pack that she got for Christmas. Another of my friends is pining over Archangel of Thune, so I keep trying to pick that up. Leverage your local market.

For $100 I'd grab 4 Thoughtseize and 4 Deathrite Shaman. I'm speaking in long term investments though because they are both going to rise after some time out of standard, both being legacy staples.
Edit: just read the standard/modern part lol. I'd still go with Thoughtseize but probably change the DRS to a few Snapcaster
My suggestions: Scavenging Ooze, abrupt decay, snapcaster mage (if you can get it below 20$), geist is reasonable as well if you can get it cheap still, restoration angel is another card that will be 10$ before long IMO. Personally I'd do a split between scooze and abrupt decay, both cards will see lots of play in modern and decay has shown itself to be a legacy staple which at the moment can be bought for 5-6$ a copy.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.

This is my rec too. Dooood the only investment you need is a deck. Cashing one gp is a great return on investment.
Thanks for the input from everyone.
I decided to pick up:
1 Thoughtseize - This finishes my playset for the next 1.5 years in standard.
2 Abrupt Decay - Again finishing a playset that I can use in both standard and modern.
1 Snapcaster Mage - Should continue to climb for as Wizards continues to print both Instants and Sorceries.
And I'll save the other $45 for when BNG cards stabilize.
FYI all this trading is on PucaTrade, which is a great tool for moving staples, trading up, or acquiring esoteric foils.
Snapcaster turned out to be a great pick up. Went from $25 at the time of posting up to $34 already!
Congrats!
I do see a lot of sage advice here.

Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)

Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
Just buy all land cards. Seriously. Invest in nothing but lands.
when you say lands you mean mana producing lands like shocks or even utility lands like wasteland etc?
$100 worth of Wastelands isn't a very diverse portfolio.
But yes, a lot of utility lands are good buys. Although a bunch of them just skyrocketed these past few months (like Wasteland, Dark Depths, Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth, Rishadan Port etc), so don't sink money into a ship that's already sailed. It may be safe, but you'd be better off wit the cash.

I fear I may have missed the boat on that one. Can a mana dork - even one decent in Zoo - really sustain $55 price tag?

Modern
URTwinRU R.I.P.
EDH
WUGRoon of the Hidden RealmWUG
Alternately, 15 Scavenging Oozes, or 6 Geist of St Traft.
It's possible that a playset of each would add up to 100, actually.
Thanks to Gabgabdevo for the awesome sig image!
I'm always looking for foil Madcap Skills and Ghitu Fire-Eater, [trade thread link forthcoming]
