This might just be a rant, but every single experience I had with Ebay sellers that are basically stores (thousands of rep that sell magic related things) has been the biggest hassle in terms of shipping. I purchased two small items from two different stores that are located within an 2 HOUR DRIVE and they still haven't arrived. It's been two weeks. I haven't ever had this problem with anything like TCGplayer.
I'd honestly rather buy my products at markup from retail. Is anybody else sick of dealing with Ebay?

Hi I'm Infecter4life and ironically I only play GBx decks.
Hm, so far since I came back to magic I have made a number of purchases on eBay, all from Kid Icarus though, get my stuff in about 3-4 days (depends on when the auction closes) every time with zero issues. Assuming a place ships the next business day after the sale you should really be getting the shipment in about 2 days if the places are that close. They just take their sweet time actually putting packages out the door assuming usps. If they are using some other service like UPS or FedEx that gets screwed up since regardless of how close you are, the package has to be sent to a central facility and then back out to local for delivery.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
Over the last 2 years, I've made over 400 purchases of MTG cards off eBay. They typically arrive within a week, some being within 2 since some places only ship Saturdays. Just don't buy online if you need your stuff within a certain time frame. I couldn't be happier with eBay because it saves me money and waiting for cards to arrive isn't a big deal for me.
I buy stuff from ebay all the time, sort to show only "Buy it now," then free shipping. I haven't had any issues in the last 3 years. Are you doing something that might be causing the problems? Auctions by users with low feedback??

I've rarely had problems like this, and not from big sellers. If they still haven't arrived, you should open cases against them. When you contacted them, what was their explanation for not shipping the order? Typically they have to ship the order within 2-3 days of payment.

Hi I'm Infecter4life and ironically I only play GBx decks.
I buy from ebay all the time and I have no problems anymore.
In fact I give a slight preference to buying off ebay because
1) you get 2% back in ebay bucks
2) you can pay with a cash back rewards credit card, which is additional $back.
3) you get positive ebay feedback from purchases, which could help if I need to up my reputation to sell back my cards.
I have a few rules I never break from.
1) Never buy if you're not completely certain what you're getting.
Ex. Buyer is selling "blood crypts" in the title, but shows pictures of overgrown tombs.
2) Never buy from people with less than 100 feedback. Even if you don't get ripped off, they tend to be slow, package poorly, misgrade their cards
3) Take a look at the "sellers feedback" and look for sales of high cost items that shipped successfully. Any recent negatives means once again, no buy.
4) 97% feedback is a big no no. 98% is too low. 99% is still too low. 99.2% feedback for me is bare minimum if I am going to buy from them.
5) Never look at a price and think wow, that's cheap. Look at the cost of shipping before establishing the price. Don't look for that 8.99 deathrite shaman only to have your heart sink that shipping is 5.99.
6) Do not trust ebay buyer protection to help you. The extra protection is nice, but I wouldnt rely on it.
7) For big sellers, check their seller feedback to see if other users agreed with the card conditions represented in the sale.
8) Do not get your heart up at that black lotus auction selling for $0.99 it's not going to end there.
9) Never buy international. a) its slow. b) you cannot trust the mail systems of foreign jurisdictions. c) there is no international tracking.
10) Kid-Icarus is pretty much the only seller I trust to get flawless cards when he advertises NM. For everyone else, it's a crap shoot. Expect some NM, some EX. Price as if you intend to buy Ex+
I have been prefering eBay for the same reasons as you, TomCat, but the only rules of yours I never break are 5, 7 and 10.
Most of the other ones I use as guides, but like with 1 I have gotten some good deals when buying based on the description. eBay buyer protection, while not too good to rely on, is pretty good. When I've had problems in the past, they have sided with me pretty quick.
As far as condition, well, even from major sellers I've had problems in the past, so I
pretty much just expect to get EX cards and am happy if they are NM. Below EX, I will for sure talk to the seller and work something out. Since I don't mind playing with played cards, I usually get pretty good deals on this too.
For 9, the only time I would be really concerned is if I need the item quickly. eBay requires the seller to use tracking if they want to win an "Item not Arrived" case, so if they don't and the item doesn't show up, pretty quickly I have my money back.
I have had cards show up exremely late in the past, I always ding them stars on shipping or description, maybe both, depending on there estimated ship date.
While I'm still skeptical anytime I get a "deal" on eBay, I've been surprised quite a few times with the quality and prices I've gotten in the past.
As an eBay seller who has shipped thousands of orders via USPS, I can say that almost everything arrives within 3 days, and rarely does it take over a week. The only times I've seen it take longer is when there's an actual delivery problem (address wrong, postage wrong, etc.). In those cases it can take up to a month before the post office returns the item to the sender. Only once was a shipment legitimately lost. And once a package got mangled. In both cases buyer's got full refunds. (I had another time a package was "lost" that I'm pretty sure was a scammer.)
100% feedback is hard to get, so I would never ban a seller or buyer just because of one ding on their record. I had a buyer recently who gave me bad feedback because he didn't like the condition of the cards he received. When I pointed out that the auction clearly said Heavily Player, he said he "Didn't see that" and "Never heard of HP before." He agreed to revise his feedback, but you only have ten days to do so. I sent him the request and he promptly didn't log into eBay again for ten days. When he did, it was too late to revise his feedback. I can wait until eBay decides (hopefully) to remove it, but that can take a month; in the meantime I'm stuck with a ding that was in no way my fault. My point is, stuff like that happens, so you need to have some leniency.
I have had mostly good experiences on ebay with MtG cards. Granted, I've sold more than I've bought, but I make sure to topload whenever possible.
That being said, I just bought a playset of Jace, AoT that came on monday. They came 2 to a sleeve with no toploader whatsoever. It's unacceptable to send $60 worth of cards in sleeves; I would never do that, and I expect better. I'm going to be sure the seller knows that in their feedback too.
I buy stuff from ebay all the time, sort to show only "Buy it now," then free shipping. I haven't had any issues in the last 3 years. Are you doing something that might be causing the problems? Auctions by users with low feedback??
This is my exact experience. My Ebay rep is 803, of which at least 700 has been me buying mtg cards. I have bought from literally hundreds of sellers, including occasionally from people with 5 total sales. I have been ripped a total of 1 time, when I had 8 rep. A local guy ripped me for $8.08 and I would have collected if I could have found his apartment (unfortunately the numbers were not near one another).
As a rule of thumb, I try to buy from sellers with over 500 rep and no less than 99%. I think the % is usually the most important thing (other than 1 rep at 100% or something like that). Less than 99% means the seller has either been unlucky or is not very careful with what they're doing. I try to avoid sellers like that. I'll estimate that I've bought from less than 10 sellers with less than 99% and less than 100 with less than 500 rep.
That being said, I am not fed up at all with Ebay. The fees kind of suck when you sell, but Ebay has been good to me so far *knock on wood*. I also would like to eventually try TCGPlayer because I've heard good things, but as of now, I'm not really in any rush. Between Ebay and even MTGS here, it's been pretty decent.

It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
Your complaint isn't about eBay at all, it's about 2 people you've done deals with that you met on that site. There are rotten apples everywhere. Sounds like bad luck to me.
But yes, I hate eBay (not the users for the most part). It's a wicked, nasty monopoly that one is nearly forced to use if one does business online. Only the very lucky can completely avoid eBay.
Shipping times vary. I often make three or four purchases at a time, pay within minutes of each other but they are received over a series of days. Not always because of shipping distance, some sellers (big and small) simply don't ship within 24 hours. I'm currently waiting for an item that was paid for on 11/15 and marked "shipped" on 11/23. I wrote to the seller and he assured me it had been shipped sooner, he was just cleaning up the records...
But, that really is the exception. I would say that 95% of the time cards arrive in under a week.
I've had no problems with card condition. But, I buy only Standard cards, so they are all relatively new. I'm not buying cards that have been kicking around binders and/or decks for a few years.

I have no complaints about ebay. I go there to get good deals, so if it takes an extra day or two to arrive, I'm fine with that.
I don't set hard line of who I'll buy from, but I'm not even going to bother bidding on say, a mox emerald, if the seller only has 1 feedback that was from 4 years ago. Now some people will do this, knowing the ebay has their back if the purchase goes south, so they are okay with the potential of having a few hundred tied up for a month if it means that occasionally the deal is real and they do get the card for cheap. I'm not that kind of person, but I don't mind buying from a guy who has 25 feedback. I just check the rest of his items for sale, sales that have actually finished, and his feedback, and if it all looks fine, it probably is.
I have fallen into the same mentality as the OP before though. I've purchased stuff from people in the same state, under the assumption that it would arrive quicker than it would otherwise, but that's rarely the case in reality. I've never been angry at that, since I've had packages from thousands of miles away get here before the estimate range.
I have purchased over 1000 cards off of Ebay in the last 2 years. If shipping is taking a while I will contact the seller just to ask. Check the postmark date as well there has been times sellers say they shipped but the postmark date is a week later. I only mind the REALLY slow shipping like 2-3 weeks. I understand people have jobs, family, etc...
In the feedback I will leave a note such as "Cards were great but the shipping was slow" which is still positive feedback.
EDIT: Easy note to go by I have received cards from Singapore in 10 days, shipping in the USA "SHOULD" be less than that.
As a seller, let me also say that the clock on shipping starts ticking *after* you pay, not when you buy! If you buy cards on Monday and don't pay until Wednesday, the chances of you getting them for Friday Night Magic are slim; I might not even ship them until Friday. Sometimes if you're lucky I'll ship the same day as payment, but other days I just can't, so dragging your feet on payment only slows down the process for everyone.

I often buy (and pay) over the weekend. It seems like when I do that items should be shipped on Monday and they should be in my hands by Friday. But, that is not a realistic expectation. I can understand individuals not shipping next business day because real life does get in the way, but when I buy from a shop (or someone who sells 1000s of item on eBay) I think next day shipping should be the norm.

A seller's handling time is clearly spelled out in their listing, so there should not be any surprises. If the seller offers 1-day handling it will say so. Otherwise, 2-3 day handling time is the norm. Anything over that, and eBay will put a special tag letting you know to expect longer handling times.
So, in my case, if you pay on Friday or Saturday, I literally don't have to ship your item until the following Wednesday. With USPS that means it will probably get there Friday or Saturday, or even (worst case usually) the next Monday. Speaking only for myself, I rarely take that long; oftentimes I will ship the following day, and most customers get their purchases quicker than they expected. But personally I don't have the resources to guarantee 1-day handling because, you know, stuff happens. So please be aware that your seller could take longer and would be perfectly within eBay listing policy to do so.
If you want guaranteed 1-day handling, either buy from a Top Rated Plus seller, or from a seller who offers that option. Note, however, that you will pay a premium for such guaranteed service.
So, in my case, if you pay on Friday or Saturday, I literally don't have to ship your item until the following Wednesday.
It's not a matter of what you "have to" do, it's a matter of what I would expect from someone who offers good customer service. I think of the 2-3 days as a time allowance for how long it might take to ship an item when something comes up and a seller is delayed; I read 2-3 days and think "shipment will be next business day except when something unusual causes a delay".
Also, there are some items or shipment options that typically require a trip to the post office. Delivery confirmation, insurance, that sort of thing? If a seller is just putting cards in a toploader, in a bubble mailer, and putting $0.66 postage on it, it can go to a mailbox after hours. Those are the kind of purchases I make (and the kind of sales I make).

Paypal shipping covers that stuff. It's very rare that anyone would need to hit the PO to send me the stuff I buy (or stuff I sell) - the only exceptions are international and APO addresses.
I would stick to what TomCat outlined and you should be safe. What he posted is exactly how I feel. I might buy from someone with less than 100 feedback if they've been an ebay member for 10+ years and have recently made some positive transactions (basically someone like me.)
It's not a matter of what you "have to" do, it's a matter of what I would expect from someone who offers good customer service.
Sure, but I'm talking about expectations, which goes full circle back to the OP's post. They aren't getting their orders shipped in a timely fashion, and I agree with that. But for the benefit of others who order, they should know that a "timely fashion" means that if they pay on the weekend, they can't expect shipment on Monday. And if that's what you want, then you should confine yourselves to sellers that advertise 1-day handling. To expect that from a seller who specifically complies with the advertised eBay guidelines of 2-3 business day handling is unrealistic.
I use Ebay all the time for cards, saddle shop needs, Tactical gear, Gun parts, etc...
I have had only 2 sellers be a pain and they were cards sellers. Notice that both sales were extremely slow to ship as I bought Boros Reckoner for 2.50 a piece and Voice of Resurgence for $17.50 as pre-orders (i got them, but way late). A few other sellers were slow to ship, but **** happens in the mail. It is a total lie that most stuff from USPS takes 2-3 days. It depends on the usps local. There is a shop I love to order from, but stopped as the mail took 3 weeks, stabbed my order with a knife, and lost another. I just don't order from that state anymore. Now there is something you need to consider. It is a stitistical semi-fact that you will get a stinker usps handling of a package. Insurance is the answer. I ship and receive ALOT of stuff and expect a few errors here and there.
I don't understand this. Why can I receive a package from WA in 3-4 days, but it takes 8 days to get a package from kentucky, New Jersey, or Michigan?
I'd honestly rather buy my products at markup from retail. Is anybody else sick of dealing with Ebay?

But for the benefit of others who order, they should know that a "timely fashion" means that if they pay on the weekend, they can't expect shipment on Monday. And if that's what you want, then you should confine yourselves to sellers that advertise 1-day handling. To expect that from a seller who specifically complies with the advertised eBay guidelines of 2-3 business day handling is unrealistic.
maybe some postal system problems
