I only play standard right now and recently traded off a tarmogoyf for 4 Voices. I don't play modern, so I was wondering "Is this a good trade?" I run a naya deck and really needed the voices, but I'm worrying if this was a bad trade or not. I just don't want the voices to drop.
Will the voices stay at a good price? Will rotation affect anything or is it a pretty good staple that every naya deck should consoder having?
Maybe Im just overreacting, but thank you for the replies!
They will probably dip a little, then six months from now be back pretty high, then drop a year from now and then stabilize for about the value you got them for in 18 months.
Anytime you trade a modern/legacy staple for standard cards, you open yourself up to fluctuations in the market.
Now, that being said, Voice will continue to be a staple for green decks in standard for the forseeable future. Whether that continues in Theros and beyond has yet to be seen. OVerall though, if you dont play modern, then you probably did just fine picking up cards that are useful to you.
Voices are also played in multiple Modern decks, so even after RTR rotates in 18 months, you'll still be able to trade them away for a good price, if you just want to play standard.
In the long run, I think you may get more for your voices, because they could easily become a highly played modern and legacy staple, depending on metagame shifts, and continue rising, whereas tarmogoyf is at a pretty high and stable price already.

Monetarily, the trade was about even. A year from now I would wager that Goyf will be worth more than 4x Voice, but probably not by a massive amount, and Goyf is probably more likely to see another reprint in the near future than Voice is.
More importantly though, you will play the Voices. My most "valuable" card is a revised Underground Sea that has been sitting sleeved in a toploader for about 15 years now. I last played it in a U/B deck when Necropotence was legal. I don't play legacy, so it has not seen play since the Clinton administration. Meanwhile, there are plenty of Standard decks I would like to play but do not because I don't want to spend the money on them. Were it not for sentimental reasons, I would have traded the underground sea for playsets of expensive standard cards long ago, because the most important "value" of your cards is the play you get from them, IMO.
If you only owned one goyf, I see this being an excellent trade since you arent going to play 1 in a deck. Now you have a playset of one of the best cards in standard.
On the other hand, if you broke up a playset of goyfs, I think you will regret this trade in a year or so.

Heh, sounds like a sine graph. Does this apply to all expensive cards?
Who is paying $40 for them now? It should carry $20+ while in Standard. Hard to say after that though. Played some in Modern, but not enough at the moment to carry a hefty price tag though.
If it wasn't a good trade...what would you do then? It's a little late to be asking for reassurance. I wouldn't have done it, but if you're going to play with the Voices, then no harm done.
Goyfs will probably be at least $150 in October 2014, while Voices will probably be $10-20. The trade is okay if you can get that much value out of using Voices in the meantime.

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.

I'd give up 4 voices for a goyf any day of the week. Voice is a $10 card the minute it rotates. It will not hold its value. It is played a bit in modern, but it's not a staple at all.
Horrible trade, voice will not see play out of standard (because of path to exile). May even drop more with the new Chain to the Rocks card coming out. I would trade for tarmogoyf anytime.
I personally would rather have the voices to play and if someone wanted a playset it looks like you are giving up a lot and could steer a trade towards your way even if they drop since it's more than a lone goyf.
People are knocking Voice, but it has a ton of potential in the right deck and is versatile enough to be good in most decks. This isn't an argument of what's better. I don't value Tarm like the masses since you do have to build around it for maximum value.

Voice already kicked Melira Pod up a notch in modern. I think it will easily find its way into more modern decks once people fully realize just how powerful it is. Sure, path is played heavily in modern, but voice also forces people to play spells outside of their optimal window. That can be a really big deal in many matchups.
The die to path is a dumb argument everything die to path unless specific card, and voice actually good against path because most all creature die but path make them wait to their turn and they can't path your other creature on your turn. You attack and not worry about instant. Very difficult ultimate to play with voice out as now combat decision is harder to assess.

1 tarmogoyf is around 85-90€.
which means that was an awesome trade, if you only play standard anyway, and if you sell them at the right time again.
