That's reassuring to hear. When I went back home for Xmas and was looking through the shared collection an old friend and I share, I came across an old academy we had that was signed by Richard Garfield with BAN THE ACADEMY written (by him) over the expansion symbol.
I figured it'd be worth only a little more. Now it sounds like something we'll definitely hang onto.
Don't think you can expect that kind of price. The artists signature is what is driving this price, not it being signed. More than likely only get LP price on yours.
For those that like signed stuff, do you have a preference with what the artist signs?
I'm a big fan of Paint Pens, either gold or silver and I find black sharpie to just be ugly (esp black sharpie eye of sauron's sol rings)
Does it matter value wise or is this just one person's aesthetics?

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I don't particularly care how the artist signs it, but I'm kind of weird in that I don't go out and get signed stuff, I have to get it from the artist myself (via in-person meeting at an event, through the mail with a SASE, etc). So it's more a memento of a personal contact with the artist than something to pimp out cards.
Although I think that the broad black chisel-tip pens leave a nice-looking signature, especially when they sign nice and large.

It depends. I'd like to get a nice clean gold or silver sig just like the next guy but convincing artist's to change their pen is not always a good idea (something like "beggars can't be choosers").
For those that like signed stuff, do you have a preference with what the artist signs?
I'll mention some popular examples for anybody that wants to google them to follow along: Like Markers said, a lot of artists have a habit of only signing a certain way such as an ultra fine black sharpie (Heather Hudson) or a metallic silver roller (Franz Vohwinkel). So owning something out of their ordinary would sometimes feels strange for me. Sometimes I enjoy dates if it is the year the set was released or early stuff like 1994 on an Arabian Nights card. If I am getting more than a set I like when artists use complimentary colors to sign instead of just black for all of it (Chris Rahn and Steve Argyle do this a lot). I think the only thing I don't like is when a sig won't show up well, and a good example of this is like a thin light silver on a newer artifact card.
For me, nothing is better than a little doodle they have left. I have commissioned for the "quality" alters before when getting cards signed and they are really great but I love the more subtle drawings artists will use to often poke fun or make a silly version of their own art. Almost always it's just with an ultra fine black sharpie but there is something about them that makes me cherish it even more.
I'm a big fan of Paint Pens, either gold or silver and I find black sharpie to just be ugly (esp black sharpie eye of sauron's sol rings)
Sometimes I agree, but sometimes I think a regular sharpie is the only thing that makes sense for a particular card or artist. You mentioned the Sol Rings Mark Tedin does and that is exactly what popped into my head before I read it. I'm not sure if I would find another marker more appropriate for his sig because Mark will always be a sharpie guy to me. And I've seen so many of his altered Sol Rings that the thick black ink on the dark brown card frame has sort of become the classic example of Mark's place in Magic. Well a lot of the original artists have that for me and still only sign in sharpies. Maybe that's what it is.
Does it matter value wise or is this just one person's aesthetics?
I interpreted this in a few ways.
A nice sig will always make me pay more. I won't bother with sigs I don't like or are sloppy (not the artists fault, conventions are hard) because I know it will always bug me.
I don't mind that some sigs are rare or command a huge premium. Sometimes I buy them, but other times I am happy to just surrender to never owning them. I am (thankfully) not a completionist. I only buy the cards I want for decks/cubes or if I particularly enjoy the artwork/artist. That means I am fine to pay a little (or a lot) extra for some Wastelands but I don't ever have to worry about tracking down an Ironhoof Ox. What Markers does with entire sets is so far beyond me. I really think only a handful of serious collectors understand the amount of dedication it takes him to gather all of those artists in one binder. Admittedly, I can't because truth be told, I have never mailed to an artist before (I'm busy... or intimidated, who knows). I have amassed 10k or so signed cards since 2012 but it's all from local shops/players, eBay, and conventions. Sometimes I have shelled out for the bigger sigs, but the real joy for me is finding the signed cards in $.50 boxes or when Star City Games has them in their cases because they get so many sigs from all over the world... it's a real treat going to conventions. Watching all of eBay feels like cheating
The other part is, I don't care about the value of the card prior to getting it signed. All my alpha/beta power is signed and I think about those a lot, like I might have tainted them or something. I always regret having that feeling because to me, I don't ever want to be afraid to harm a cards value by adding something I actually love. I mean I get my pickup truck dirty all the time because I love owning a vehicle that can do that. I don't collect Magic to have as a back burner investment or to fulfill a desire to own something pimp but I love art and I love artists and I play this game so it makes sense for me.
I didn't meant to write so much but it is my only MTG passion.
Just picked up a foil, Japanese Advent of the Wurm in trade. Traded at regular foil price so I'm not too concerned if I got a good deal, however ebay completed listings doesn't offer many results. Was wondering what everyone else thought of the card as a rarity?
So I picked up this wasteland the other day at a pretty significant discount. As shown in the pick, someone has written all over the card, "Why Aren't you Playing All Mountains", and then signed it. The signature is clearly not the artists, but other than that I have no clue who signed it. Looks like John M or something. Does anyone recognize the signature, or is it just some random dude writing all over a valuable card? I can get a better picture if someone is genuinely curious, just snapped a quick cell pic to give you guys an idea. Also, this would get valued at HP/damaged condition, correct?

Not sure who John M is off the top of my head, but I'd start looking at old Sligh deck players from 1999.
The "all mountain" comment leads me to believe this person was running Sligh as they featured land disruption and played almost all mountains. Specifically see Mark Le Pine's deck from 1999.

I thought this would be the best forum to post on. How would I evaluate the quality of misprint and value of this card? Just opened a pack and found this printing smudge on the corner.
Sorry, mobile platform will not let me post the image just yet. I will post when I get to a computer.

That's a pretty extreme printing error. And while it's on a card that does see lots of play, Forest doesn't exactly top the price charts. You can probably get $10-$15 for it if you throw it on eBay - there's gotta be someone out there who wants a pretty messed-up basic for their deck.

I have someone locally that's interested in my Foil S-Chinese Advent of the Wurm. I feel like G/W can become a contender in this meta, especially with the help of the scry land and, possibly, a g/w god? Speculation aside, SCG has a S-Chinese foil advent for $12, should I try to trade at that price? Ebay isn't really helping me get value out of this card.
Also on the subject of that Forest misprint, I too opened one the other day in draft and took to posting it on Ebay. No bites yet however there's 1 watcher and a few views as of this posting.
I don't think Chinese is particularly sought after, so I'd conservatively guess $50 if you want it priced to move. I'm sure you could get more from the right buyer if you're willing to hold out.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.

I'd say the same price as an English one myself.
Chinese generally tend to be in higher qty and a bit less expensive or the same price as English.
I'd call it $25-30 myself.
Of course the "right person" might pay more, but that's true of most any card.

very nice sir. The circles are where the cut lines were suppose to go.
As for price, there really is no set price and with what you have, the sky is the limit. Sol rings are always in demand and this one is pretty pimp, so you will get a premium. Hold out for the right buyer, and you will surely walk away a winner .
Not sure where else to put this, but does anyone understand what happened to the price of ___? I know someone mentioned it a while ago in another thread (months ago), but all the available foils on tcgplayer are still ridiculously expensive for a random Unhinged uncommon that doesn't even see cube play.

Evil is even, truth is an odd number, and death is a full stop.
50-100 is a solid quote I think. Ebay had a similar one for $70, but it wasn't as jacked up as mine, so I figure the upper end of that estimate seems about right. Thanks, I think I'll put it at 90-100 as you can see the start of the next card on mine

(The little specs on it are simple dust and detritis from the room. The card is in mint condition.)
Now, I don't know a lot about what makes the value of the miscut/misprint market tick. However, one thing I think I've learned is that, up until a certain point, being miscut actually hurts the value of a card (although this point is also affected by the rarity and desirability of a card as well). Only once a miscut is severe enough does it actually help the value of a card, so my question is this: Is this card miscut enough for it to be worth more than a regular foil like it, or is it actually worth less?

I would say that it does not pass the point of "worth more". The centering is far enough off to notice, but not far enough off to be "cool". This is an entirely subjective thing, but generally you want one border to be at least gone before you start talking really cool (valuable) misprint. Having a second card visible is extreme bonus points. Just being a bit off-center means that you lose some of the market on foil sales from people who want everything to be perfect. Me, I'd probably buy that for the same price as a regular Purphoros foil, because it deals just as many damage as a perfectly centered one. But YMMV.
