Yeah, I think Tectonic Edge is just as good as Ghost Quarter if not better in some cases. With GQ, they still get to keep a land.
Ghost Quarter is important for a few reasons:
1. It has no activation cost and ties up no resources beyond the tap and sacrifice activation
2. It has no condition to it
3. It is functional against aggro decks and has the potential to color-screw decks like Zoo
4. It can be used on your own lands (Flagstones.Boros)
5. It is better against manlands than Tectonic Edge (as it handles Bl/Inkmoth Nexus, Mutavault, and Treetop Village)
You're trading a land for their best land, and sometimes they get nothing out of the deal as an upside (Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter seem pretty good together for this reason). The fact that a player can scumbag you out of Tectonic Edge activations is also relevant when most non-Manland based land effects require a maximum of 3 lands to function (Punishing Fire/Grove is 3 lands, Academy Ruins is 3 lands, Treetop Village is 3 lands, the Mutavault and Blinkmoth lands are two lands).
If you want to disagree with me, that's fine, but the number of available Ghost Quarter is not increasing and they're currently priced low, so debating me and being wrong and not investing has greater negative EV than investing and being wrong and reselling at your buy-in price.
Aside from Snow Lands, what interaction do you expect to come out of them? Your best Snow card (Depths) is banned and the only creature that has ever seen real play is Boreal Elf. I honestly want to see Skred Deck Wins return, but I don't have high hopes for that.

Bah. I bought up three playsets of Ghost Quarters back in '09 when I started buying up cards for OverExtended (before it even had a name).

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
A small birdie told me to stock up on Sower of Temptations....something about "many" games have been won off the back of this 2/2 flying tempo snatcher.
So I'm going to do my 5 play-set thing with hopes of the rollover.
Just passing the info along while you still can get sets for under 35 with ease, modern has surely wrapped into a wildfire.

Keep in mind that Ghost Quarters are uncommons. The ceiling for them will definitely not be that high. I would say that it will settle around what other good playable uncommons like Path to Exile are at now (barring a reprint). Chances for a reprint are high though in my opinion...
This whole announcement has sparked madness. Is this the usual for a new format announcement? Vendillion Clique at 20+ , CHB buying Tarmogoyf's for 70! I feel like that's what they were selling it for like an hour ago.

are the counter argument that scares some people though.
That is true. Force of Wills and Wastelands are other examples. But these cards you mention are Legacy staples and are not allowed in Modern (Aether Vial being the exception). Ghost Quarter is NOT a Legacy staple (as far as I know) and even in casual formats like EDH, there are better cards.
I'm just thinking from Modern perspective and that is why I don't think the ceiling is that high for Ghost Quarter. But like I said, I could be wrong and it could be a 4 of in most tournament decks someday...
Guys, it's great that you've been saving up acorns for the winter/Modern, but please keep brags to a bare not at all. Pass on info, but don't make a point of writing out how super sick it is you got 600 and how you totally gamed everything.
Here are my picks.
Some are just votes of confidence. Kijin is on the money for ghost quarter IMO.
+Ghost Quarter.
Look guys, I have seen Kijin be wrong on a card once, which was phantasmal image.
He's pretty much always right, and he had a REALLY good argument as to why this is the best LD in the new format. I'll be picking up all of them I can find for a buck. [at frank and sons, not online]
+Sower of Temptation
Well, I am pretty sure he doesn't need to be in fae tribal to survive.
And - jeebus. He might be the second best blue creature after clique.
I mean, what with you being able to counter kill spells since you play blue, he just seems crazy good. Packed in with V-Clique and whatnot, I'm willing to bank on him going up at least a little bit.
Maybe: Scapeshift
Yeah, it's neutered without Valakut, but who knows, it seems possible that this could create a cool deck, and at 30 something cents, you can't really lose picking them up. Aether Vial
I'm on the fence with this. Better safe than sorry since they ain't going down tho.
General Merfolk - if 'folk Top8, I expect prices for stuff like Coralhelm Commander to go up. Many have been reprinted to death unfortunately, like I wouldn't bank on lord of atlantis increasing. Cursecatcher as a HUGE part of the deck I think could rise a buck or 2.
Again, this is IF they have a surprise win. Still - it's possible.
EDIT:
One card I am really on the fence about: Vengevine
What do you guys think?
Isn't he a great Zoo card?
Also Noble Hierarch seems like she'll be a staple in whatever ends up coming up.
Or am I off base with the last 2?
sorry not sure if someone already covered this, but whats going on w/ the shockland prices? i see steam vents going for lots of money on blackborder, even more then breeding pool and other colors. will these prices drop? or are all the shocklands going to rise and stay there?
obviously there is no way they can hit dual land prices...
As for the other two, everyone is hyping Zoo so much, I can only believe they will go up. Knight and Hierarch were used in powerful decks in Standard and Extended and are still used in multiple powerful decks in Legacy. To be honest, I didn't really buy them to resell. I've been wanting them for Legacy for awhile, and I don't want to be left behind.

After checking ebay completed listings, ebay buy it nows, and online store prices, I came up with the following pricing/valuation for the individual shocklands:
Its amazing how some of them just seem to keep going up. Though it should be noted that while many of them continue to increase, the top two seem to have stalled out. I still think $35-$40 is going to end up being the top of the range for these, and that there will probably be a clog in the middle around $20 or so, with a couple like steam vents and watery grave likely ending up between $25-$30. And of course, poor sacred foundry, though up to $15 now, still languished at the bottom.

Sower of Temptation is great vs. Emrakul, The Aeons Torn. The turn after they cast him, you can tap him down with Cryptic Command. Then when you finally get your turn, you can cast sower and steal him. It's a play I play to employ.

its hilarious that this is the most expensive(or becoming the most expensive) these lands have ever been.

It's a unique effect, is 'free' to cast, and efficient enough to use. It's also rather unlikely to be reprinted..ever. Even in Modern.
I already had them..just hoping they find a home and go up more than anything.
