Null Rod movement could also be explained by Eternal Weekend being just around the corner. The most popular unpowered lists tend to run it, so anyone gunning for the top unpowered spot in the Vintage event is likely looking for 'em.
Combine that with it being an old card with limited supply and Reserve List status meaning that supply is never growing and you have a recipe for upward momentum.
I know that Vintage isn't that big of a motivator for card prices, but do bear in mind that we've seen both Bazaar and Workshop shoot up in the past few months as we approach Eternal Weekend, so I believe there is at least some correlation here.
Whatever is the cause, you can rest assured that his has actual nothing to do with legacy. It's someone just trying to collect some random old card, and buying out a handful of copies of such a card is enough to be noticeable.
I always check out the "interests" page at mtgstocks.com - always interested in seeing the cards rise & fall before others, helps w/ Puca Trading. Gonna post in the EDH/Commander thread then.

Well there's the problem right there. It's easy causing spikes these days with sites like that and everyone is so swipe happy with their money.
My apologies if I'm posting here as opposed to the buy or sell thread. Was wondering if anyone had an idea about a good time to pick up dual lands, specifically U/x ones. Unlimited most likely. Just wanted to start putting together a deck and didn't know if seas/tundras/volc islands were at a low or if they have room to drop. Not looking at like $50 of course, but would now-ish be a good time?

cool cool, thank you. Any reason waiting a bit would come back to bite me? not necessarily to see if they drop but to save a little more so I can buy a few and save on shipping :/ I wouldn't think they would rise appreciably, but I don't really know the legacy scene and not sure if any major tourneys are coming up

Considering dual lands on average have dropped around 30% from this time a year ago, including all the blue dual lands, "they basically go up" is 100% incorrect.
They have a price ceiling wherein the cost becomes too prohibitive and decreases the demand on them. They're not "free money" if you just sit on them for a long time.

The drop you're referring to was a natural correction after a huge spike due to the relative increase in value of Modern staples and the subsequent trading up into duals that occurred. If you look at the pre-spike price compared to now duals have gained over 50% in value. It's true that they don't just increase in value, but the overall trend is definitely upwards when looked at over a reasonable time scale.
To answer the question about the best time to buy duals, in my experience around Christmas time when people's finances are a bit strapped is a good time to skulk around eBay looking for steals. I'd recommend only buying from reputable sellers nowadays though with the proliferation of fakes good enough to be tough to identify online.
The best time to pick up duals is always now, as long as you get a decent deal. The big question now is how the Expeditions will relate to dual prices. Usually duals start spiking any time when people start buy listing cards for duals en masse. If the blue fetchlands can be traded directly into blue duals, there will be a steady pressure towards raising dual prices.
So I would search for any deals out there and start picking the duals up now and get the rest later when there are more opportunities around holidays. I doubt that one can save too much by waiting for few months, compared to wisely looking for good prices now and waiting always opens one to a risk of another spike.
As for legacy gainers, Eureka has been moving up for the last 24 hours. Finding really nm english copies for under 175$ is getting pretty hard. The card moved to 100+$ last spring after a few heavy handed reminders from finance writers, but this is the first significant increase after the move. There's a fun tier 2 deck using them and with each new CiP-trigger creature there's bigger chance of something breaking and the card jumping to 250$ overnight.
Lot of other Legends rares have also seen smaller upticks, cards like Disharmony, Imprison, Caverns of Despair, Chains, Divine Intervention and even Bronze Horse. So for any people out there wanting to finish a Legends set, some cards are gaining slowly, but steadily and finding nm copies is getting expensive on most older fringe playable cards.
That's also one issue, that crops up with older high end cards, like Bazaar, Workshop, Tabernacle and Library. One can find MP and beat copies for reasonable prices, but if one needs a nm copy, the value is pretty much TCG mid or even higher.

This is my issue on two fronts: Firstly, I want to complete the sets, but am not in the states right now, so it is difficult to find these old cards. As much as I want to find a NM Quarum Trench Gnomes, I know it'll be difficult. I should've bought that Eureka for $90 a year ago. Oh well. Secondly, some of my more expensive old cards are literally unplayed NM condition, which I'm starting to think isn't completely ideal, because of the dearth of fakes propping up these days. Is it really worth shelling out the extra cash for NM copies these days?
Additionally, is there any difference at this point between Arabian Nights, Antiquities and Legends rares? Are they all equally scarce?

Italian Legends is fairly common, and the prices of that printing reflect that. There are also pretty big differences in printing between the languages. TCGPlayer prices are for English cards.
Ironically Italian The Dark is much rarer than Italian Legends and English The Dark, with a much smaller print run, and was released earlier.
