Inspired by a segment called "Buy or Sell" on a local afternoon sports-talk radio show, I wanted to start this thread here in MSC to see if it might take off.
The idea is, when stuck with a question of buying or selling a specific card at a particular price, you post to this thread "[Card] for [price], buy or sell?" and respondents can voice their stance. Anyone that replies to a "buy or sell" has to be on one side or the other - there's no middle ground!
***NOTE: Like the "A vs. B" trade thread, this is NOT a price check thread. Anyone can look up what a particular card is selling for on SCG, eBay, whatever. This thread is about discussing whether you should "buy or sell" a card at a specific price based on any number of factors.
Example: If I post "Jace, the Mind Sculptor at $60, buy or sell?", one response might be "I'm SELLING JTMS at $60. It's banned in Modern and will only drop over time as Legacy and Vintage decks find it harder to resolve a 4cc spell." Another might be "I'm BUYING JTMS at $60. It's seeing more and more play in Legacy, will likely never be reprinted, and is just starting to rise from its lowest price point. It'll be worth $100 again a year from now."
So, pretty simple really. Here's my first buy-or-sell:
At 35 for a confidant, I would sell. 35 really seems to be one of the higher ebay prices and from what I understand confidant isn't the legacy juggernaut it used to be.
Buy. $35 is definitely lower than any shops price (btw, cfb's buylist values confidant at $32.5 store credit) and tbh, its still easy to move confidants so you'd definitely be able to make a quick profit.
Tempered Steel's days in Standard are over but Affinity just won GP Columbus.
I would personally sell then pick them up right around October. Yes Tempered Steel isn't a top standard deck but there are still more casual FNMers that have them and will dump them in october.
I agree. There's still room for them to fall. I'd be buying them around October just post rotation at $7-8 and try to move them during Modern season for $10-12.
Tempered Steel's days in Standard are over but Affinity just won GP Columbus.
I've learned my lesson from buying Standard cards that are about to rotate, so even though I think it has decent long-term value and Modern/Legacy demand, and even though it's still going a little higher on eBay, I'm selling Mox Opal at $10 because it'll go down before it goes back up.
I also was buying (bought) Dark Confidants at $35, because they were in great condition, and because I've sold off my Confidants twice in the past and regretted it both times, even though both times I made money. I don't think it's getting reprinted for a while, if at all, and think it has room to keep going up.
From the same set, I'm buying Chord of Calling at $8.50 because it's Modern-playable and great for casual + EDH. Ravnica rares seem to get super popular so this one probably will rise more too.
EDIT: Not sure what I was thinking on this one yesterday. If someone wants to give me $8.50 for a Chord of Calling, it's theirs. Fun, cute card, but to me not a legitimate enough spell to command a high price tag.

This one is definitely a bit trickier. I would say sell just because it is not modern season yet. I think they have stabilized and will go up at modern season time but now is not the time to get them to flip for profit since the turnaround time is so far away.
Buy or Sell: Hallowed Fountain at $25
I need 2 of these for a modern deck im building but i cant decide if i should wait till rtr.
Buy or Sell: Jace, the Mind Sculptor at $55.
I have one of these im not using and i cant decide if i should sell now or wait since its starting to increase. What about investing in these for the long-term?
Jace will slowly increase in price over time, and it's been shown that FTV reprints rarely impact card prices, and Wizards is uncomfortable putting cards commanding this much value in reprint products like Duel Decks. So I would say Jace is a long-term buy.
What about hallowed fountain or all the shock lands for that matter? Do u think the reprints will significantly drive down the price? In some ways i dont think so cause standard is the most popular format and all the standard players will be buying any shocks they can find, therfore driving up the prices.

If the art is different (which it probably is), I think the prices will be stable for the old ones.
On another note, where are people flipping their cards for these cash values?

Selling Hallowed Fountain at $25 - it's coming back to Standard, most likely.
Buying JTMS at $55 all day long - we'll never see a reprint (opinion), and it's only going up.
On another note, where are people flipping their cards for these cash values?
They're not necessarily flipping for these prices. But if you have an opportunity to buy at a specific price, somebody must be the seller. The point is to say whether you'd rather be the buyer or the seller for a card at a specific price, if you have to pick one.
To reiterate, it's more of a "give your opinion on the long term price prospects on a given card". Buy if you think the card will be more expensive in the future, sell if less.
I'm selling Hallowed Fountains at even $20 in anticipation of a reprint to push them into the $15-18 range. Buy JTMS under 55 because of Legacy, Vintage, and EDH play as well as the low probability of a reprint outside FTV.
Buy or Sell: Karakas at $70?

Buy or Sell: Karakas at $70?
Sell it at $70. I personally won't pay more than $50-ish for a Karakas. I think its good but not good enough to command $70. I think the main reason why its increasing is due to the popularity of Reanimator and Show and Tell. It's also a staple in Maverick which is pretty popular. I'm fine with my Italian Karakas that I purchased for $42.
Buy or sell Cavern of Souls at $18-$20?
Cavern of Souls looks like its mainly used for mana fixing in Standard right now but looks like its starting to be used in legacy (most notably top 8 Maverick lists). I feel like it could be equally likely to drop or rise. It might drop because the card is being over hyped in standard or Legacy players won't buy it for its $20 price tag post rotation because it isn't good enough. It could also rise post rotation because it will, indeed, live up to its awesomenes and therefore will be high in demand.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.

I would sell Cavern at $20, I am not sure that it is that ground shattering in Legacy. It seems that only adding colored mana when playing creatures might not be good enough in current legacy decks. Not saying that the card won't get played, but I feel that EDH and casual appeal will make this card retain some decent value after rotation.

Buy or Sell: Karakas at $70?
SELL KARAKAS AT $70
I had a karakas listed for months at $38 and only just recently did I get any bites. Further more, I played Death and Taxes while karakas was ~$50 on SCG and picked up 5 at $20 each on (5 seperate) ebay auctions. This card is incredibly over-inflated, not on the reserved list, and is just a flavor of the week right now.
I say definitely sell the cavern at 20 if you can. I doubt it will see as much standard play after rotation (since leak rotates and all). And legacy I feel like it'd being tried but not going to be a staple as much. Also it IS a rare so I wouldnt bank on it too much. It could be printed in an event deck or something.
On the ajani matter, I say definitely sell right now. It is only going down since the release of m13 and literally sees almost no competitive play. I suggest dropping them and picking them back up if you like what you see in RTR.
I'm selling Ajani CotP at any price below the 8-10 range. Even a cursory comparison to Elspeth 1.0 shows why he's not anywhere close to that level. I don't think he's that good at all.

Buy or sell: Standstill at $4.50? - Will it ever see serious Legacy play again?
Buy or sell: Green Sun's Zenith at $6.75? - Will the event deck/rotation hurt its price, or will Legacy keep it propped up?
Buy or sell: Force of Will at $51? - This card has seemed stagnant for about a year now, is it at its ceiling?
Buy or sell: Standstill at $4.50? - Will it ever see serious Legacy play again?
I would say to buy it at that price. I remember when Standstill was popular it was worth over $10. And Legacy Merfolk decks are starting to re-include Standstill into their lists.

I don't know bout the legacy ones but for GSZ, I suggest picking up as many as you can AFTER the influx of the event decks (so like 2-3 weeks from now). Thats when it will be the lowest price and a good time to grab some for future speculation.

I say wait off on the pods. They should drop a little bit lower after rotation and when they do, THAT is the time to jump on them.
