I'll start off by saying ANY modern era booster box at $100 or below is a great overall deal. For that box, at a local shop where it has not be resealed with mapped packs...
I'm gonna drive down to Sagamore Hills, OH and buy it tomorrow if you don't
Considering SCG is sold out of them at $180 I'd say that's a very good deal. That said you need to have tempered expectations when opening older boxes. Rarity distribution was a lot different back then. For example, with 5th Dawn you have:
55 commons
55 uncommons
55 rares
So at 36 packs you should expect 1 of roughly 65% of the rares, 1 of every uncommon and 2 of about 20% of them, and plenty of the commons. So you're likely to get 2 of the 4 big rares (crucible of worlds, engineered explosives, mycosynth golem, vedalkan shackles), some of the next tier rares (mephidross vampire, silent arbiter, auriok champion, helm of kaldra, vedalkan orrery), and likely 1 of each money uncommon (eternal witness, blasting station, energy chamber, steelshapers gift, magma jet, etc) and thats likely it for value. So all in all you should come close to recouping the cost of the box. The likely hood of getting duplicates of any rare is also much less as the print runs were more simplistic back then. Also some of these could be reprinted in MM which would hurt value as most would be rares I'd think (and even more so for the uncommons if reprinted)
So all in all if you get this to have fun opening packs and drafting... great investment and a VERY good deal considering what this box should go for... from a pure $$$ though you still might not recoup your costs but you got a good shot at it
was thinking about doing that as well, not sure if im gonna open it (I play mostly standard, so the stuff wouldnt help me directly) or if I just sell it for a quick 50-60 buck profit

I couldn't be an active member here without at least one infraction point!
I wouldn't hesitate. On top of a reasonable chance of pulling a money rare or 2, the set is pretty full of casual and tourney worthy commons and uncommons. You should pull 10-12 bucks worth of Serum Visions alone.

Well, if you open it, you're gambling that you can not only open a decent profit, but actually sell it off. A quick $50-60 profit is a lot easier, less time consuming, and costly than trying to sell off all the cards you open to try and reach the same profit. Like the above poster said, you can open $10-12 worth of Serum Visions, but it's harder to realize that profit, especially for all the random cards you get worth a few dollars.
Those are the cards of value out of the box. Personally, I would go with a quick flip of selling the box. However, it is not the worse decision you can make.
Last time I sold a box of 5d it was for about 110-115.. and that's when the ONLY things worth opening were Shackles/EE/Crucible. With all the modern spikes (See above), getting one at even more than that price is totally worth it. For what you can get it for? Snap buy.

If your deck is 60 cards then you're playing with the best possible odds. 61? Probably won't alter your odds too much but we all know that 96% pure meth won't cut it next to Heisenberg's 99%.
I'd definitely buy it for that price, but I'd keep it sealed and flip it as is. A couple recent ebay auctions are averaging at around $160 for a sealed box, which I think is more than you would get cracking and parting it out. I've opened a couple of 5D boxes before, and it's not really all that exciting. It's not that old, and it's not like there's a possibility for a $100 card to get the adrenaline rushing.
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
I want to say buy it, but a little over a year ago I bought a sealed box and it is probably one of the worst boxes I ever got. There wasn't really any good rates and I didn't even get one of all the uncommons. Seems back then they didn't mix the cards up as well, so just beware if you open it...
I would have a hard time flipping sealed product (but I'm a player, not a store), and I doubt I can rip enough valuable singles like Engineered Explosives, Crucible of Worlds, and Vedalken Shackles to make this worthwhile. If you enjoy drafting or can easily flip it as sealed product though, you probably won't be able to acquire this cheaper.

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
I would buy at 99 $ and sit on it for a few more years. But if you buy it you can move it here on sales forum or if you have decent ebay-account (95+ % positive, with some sales) the box can be sold. But on getting an easy 60 $ profit, I disagree. You can propably move it at 150 on ebay, which will turn to 30 $ profit after fees. On other forums (here Magic traders etc), you might realise about 40 $ profit currently.
As an auction, I would start at 110 $, which will most likely get some early bids and should get you at least even after fees. I wouldn't wonder if the price would end even above 170 $ if some people start a bidding war. But outside a bidding war a 5th Dawn box is worth about 150 $ (In Europe (MKM) the cheapest unsold english box is 157 $ (119 €))
Buy it, flip it. I'd try and flip it on Craigslist first. You should be able to get $150+ in cash, and save your self the hassle of shipping and ebay fees.
umm... if you crack it now. serum visions/cranial plating/paradise mantel/eternal witness should make it profitable even if you don't pull crazy rares.
I just had a similar thing happen to me with a booster box of New Phyrexia that had a $105 price tag at the least popular LCS. I didn't anticipate making anything or breaking even necessarily but there were a ton of staples I needed. Turned out to be quite a few good pulls (foil rare was pathetic but I've been on a roll with those so I took it in stride). I was very happy overall. I'm really into building pauper decks for friends/new players so I'll generally buy a box if the price is right.
Good deal? I looked up the list and it seems there is some nice stuff in there, but Im not sure- should I pull the trigger?

Any reasoning? It seems like a win if you open it and even more of a win if you flip it.

did manage to get 12 loose zendikar packs for 3 bucks each, but didnt hit anything interesting really, except the lands...
Too bad about the box. Zendikar packs are 10 bucks here, good score even without hitting a Misty Rainforest or something sweet.
