I think my worst box was SoM. It had Venser and the crap mythics, with maybe 2 fastlands. I still bought more packs and boxes until I bought a box of RtR. Probably my best value which gave me back all of my money, but then I sold everything shortly after. About a wk later I bought Zombardment.
It's weird, I get crap and I buy more. I get awesome and I buy singles. Probably a subconscious competitive side to me.
I wish I pulled a PW from my Scars box. The only thing I got out of my box that was even worth anything was a Sword of Body and Mind.
RoE? I think. I open only RoE and Zendikar, though. And Zendikar give me insane value.
Why no Worldwake?
The few actual boxes I've opened have been pretty good. A box that was seemingly bad was Planar Chaos when the last 4 packs ended up having Damnation, Extirpate, and FOIL Extirpate. Recouped about $60 there.
My "worst" box ever was Revised, pulling only 1 Shivan Dragon. Ended up pulling 3 Mahamoti Djinn, which wasn't too bad as a card, but worth 1/5 the price of a Shivan. Incidentally, we pulled 4 Duals in that box (2 Taiga).

Why would you buy a box when you can get 4x sets of commons and uncommons for 50 odd bucks on ebay. That is a whooping 700 cards. You can buy the duals and certain rares you want also and have most of the good stuff for lets say 200 to 300 bucks. You will never get that kind of value from opening packs.
3 boxes of Homelands...2 boxes and 21 packs deep I finally brush aside 6 copies of a crap card titled Baron Sengir to hold high my first copy out Autumn Willow, what a pile of **** the set was JUST to open...but I never thought I would go that deep into a box/'s to get and see one decent card (which now isn't even more then a memory).
Homelands you took my innocence, and that box drove the spike!!!
Shadowmore was the worst Box I opened/bought. There was no rare lands or anything above $2 as a rare. No Foil card either. Had to buy singles to get any of the good rares/uncommons.
I don't buy boxes or fat packs for any reason anymore, but I will buy a Walmart pack when I get a tank of gas. I have opened a Liliana of the veil, Fetch land (GU), Foil Deathrite Shaman+Trostani, Falkenrath Aristocrat+Huntmaster, Foil Jace (1.0), Thoughtsieze, and some others. It seems that 1 in 2 packs is a really good pick for packs at the Boerne, Texas Walmart. Although, my winning packs from FNM are 90% toilet paper. I guess the world balances itself out.

On that note, I too feel like the packs from walmart and target do give better things. Do you think that they are sorted differently from boxes due to being packed in those cardboard things?

I think this is just for some people. I have opened up some very below average packs from Walmart and Target (because I always hear stories of wonderful cards). There was even a point where I believed stories that the packs from Walmart were BOX MAPPED before packaged, which could be true. Box mapping does not find the good FOILS though.
My friend's GF bought him a pack back in the days and he pulled a FOIL Baneslayer Angel (not in it's height, but still at $25 :))

I bought a sealed box of Fallen Empires for $90, when it was the most recent set in print. To keep Sealed, as an 'investment'. After I knew you could 'push' the packs to read what rares were in them. I still have it Sealed, and am (probably) never, ever, going to get the $90 out of it, let alone any sort of interest on it.
On that note, I too feel like the packs from walmart and target do give better things. Do you think that they are sorted differently from boxes due to being packed in those cardboard things?
Can't make any claims, but speculate with deductive reasoning.
Theory 1: Have you ever been to a Casino? As you walk to the bathrooms; the one armed bandits are going with consistent winnings. WHY? They are trying to tempt you into playing! As it follows, Wizards knows that some folks may see some new packs while checking out at Wal-Mart or Target. If you notice; the packs at walmart are near the cigerate counter to give the most visibility since that line in generally always open. If the packs yeild high value cards; you might play more and invest just as the casino does with slot machines. Target stores generally have them near far left or right side of the store at front door for maximum view. I have only seen the packs once, in the toy center.
Theory 2: I am lucky at Wal-Mart in Boerne, Texas and suck at local card stores.
Theory 3: Same as 1, but packs are really "charged" with good cards, because Wal-Mart has to move product fast or face a devalue in price or worse.
Theory 4: We are akin to gambling adicts and are looking for the best score on opening high value cards.
worst box I ever opened was Alara Reborn. The box had one mythic which was Defiler of Souls or some garbage.. Also, there was only one bloodbraid elf in the box as well. I think the thing that really pissed me off though was the fact that it wasn't sorted properly. I ended up with about 3 Soulquake, and 2 each of Mycoid Shepherd, Cloven Casting, and Sages of the Anima. The box did have 2 foil rares though..which were Lavalanche and Filigree Angel
I opened two cheap FS boxes. I was cuious about the mapping so I opened all the packs just to find out if it really works. it was almost 80% consistent.
Unfortunately I did not open any single goyf... But lot's of really usefull stuff for EDH like foil Jhoira etc. But buying singles with the same amount of money would have had a better benefit.
Can't make any claims, but speculate with deductive reasoning.

I do feel you guys are onto something with the wal-mart packs.
The only two times I bought fat packs I managed to get a Jace TMS and Baneslayer.
Another great location for buying packs, tounry packs, and fat packs was Gamestop. Do you remember the kamagawa block, precon deck rats? It had a Jitte in it. A Gamestop in San Antonio had a whole box of them in the back. They were not selling cause no one knew they were there. I found them and made an offer for $5 each. I bought 8 of them.
I have also made offers for old fat packs, single packs, and othersfor cheap and they always took it. A friend of mine recently stopped at a Family Dollar to get cheap laundry soap, and found Innistrad boosters for a $1.50 (full box). Didn't get any Snapcasters or GOST, but landed plainswalkers and lands.
Keep your eyes open cause you never know.
Yesterday Wal-Mart Gatecrash Pack- Foil Shock land (G/R) and Cryptghast. Not bad on a Random pak plus fuel purchase.
I havent bought hardly any gatecrash so i bought 10 packs today on a whim. Pulled no shocks and just all garbage. I hate wasting my money on trashy boosters.
I haven't been playing all that long, but I was really disappointed with my Avacyn box. I got crap (aside from 3 Sigarda's) and when they dropped to $5 each I said I was going down with the ship. When they hit $15 again I moved all three.
No Entreat, no Cavern, No Bonfire which by the time I got in on a box (I was out of town and they sold out), those cards were worth quite a bit.
Only if they're horribly mispriced. Market value on long-out-of-print boosters is always higher than the expected value of the pack for the sole reason that cards can be taken out of shrinkwrap but never put back in it.
I bought a sealed box of Fallen Empires for $90, when it was the most recent set in print. To keep Sealed, as an 'investment'. After I knew you could 'push' the packs to read what rares were in them. But you'd be wrong. Have you even attempted the eBay route? There are currently 10 different listings, one has 10 bids, sitting at $71, item # 111021084330, the other sits at $79.95 with 5 bids, item # 290872186555Item. Both are charging shipping in excess of $11, so that's not eating into profits.
I looked at every closed auction since 1/1/13, and they went for (rounded to the nearest dollar):
$81
$115
$86
$100
$103
$115
$103
$121
$80
$104
$100
$121
$81
$77
$86
$87
$99
I didn't include two outliers which sold for $159 and $250, b/c I don't see why you can expect to get that, they were flukes.
Over 17 auctions that's an average of $97.59. Take off ebay's 12% cut and you'll pocket about $85, maybe a little less b/c some of those included shipping in that sale price, others did not. If you can walk away from what you consider a bad investment losing $5-$10, there's nothing wrong with that. Also worth noting is many of them had more than 10 bids on them, indicating that interest is there...
