Yes, but that was 5 cmc, this one is 4 cmc, so that's not bad at all.
I'm pretty sure case is closed on this guy being atrocious. As far as value goes, the only thing he has going for him is he the fact is a walker, therefore some kitchen table will always have use for him. I'd say $8 is pretty spot on, meaning lots of places will probably throw him around for $5 once the next set is out.
You literally can swing your board, ignore him and leave a 1/1 token open to block him. Terribad.
I wouldn't be buying them at $10, considering I would rather have any Shockland instead of him in a booster. I've already played him in cube and he was pretty useless imo.
I kinda like him as a 4 mana 5/5 that doesn't die to terminus and is indestructible. Of course he can't block either, but he's still a significant offensive threat that's decently hard for control to deal with.

Big thanks to DarkNightCavalier from heroes of the planes studios for the sig!
Hahaha! I find everyone's views on the new Gideon hularious. He's the same as his previous card, just more powerful for a cheaper cost.
Finally, he's completely playable. You just use him as a second life source. Opponent can only handle him or you every turn. Not both.
The only thing I can see working with Gideon is if you had a board wipe after wards like a Day of Judgement. But that's 8 mana you have to dump in one turn. Otherwise you need to have a large board presence if you're able to put a lot of counters on him. He's not as bad as Tibalt, but he is one of the worst walkers I have seen recently.
In a vaccum or draft scenario, I don't think anyone he is arguing he has *some* merits, there are few answers for him in GC limited enviroments. But for conventional use, he is abysmal. At best he is a big durdle like Serra Avatar, except he costs 4 instead of 7, but he still is chumpable for years and cannot block.
He cannot do anything for a full turn, and if your opponent has enough on the board to pump his ultimate or make him a gigantic fatty, how do you expect to live long enough to utilize it?
To repeatedly answer the OP, the likelyhood that this card will ever shift from your $40 (playset) investment to profitable margins, is VERY slim.
Still the same chump-ing problem. Consider him vs. other white 4-drops, if you're looking at him as a creature; don't the others benefit more from the 3 cards you mentioned--or most any other creature enhancement?
One possibility I've heard mentioned for him to be better is Rancor; solves the chumping problem, at least.

Look at his abilities. Both first abilities force your opponent to deal with him, but Champion of Justice will get more loyalty counters on him for more creatures opponent controls.
They both have the same 0 ability but Champion can be stronger than his previous card.
Both negative abilities are removal abilities, just that Champion cost's a bit extra and wins the game.

All in all, he's a powerful card.

The previous Gideon could lock a game down completely.
He could completely throw off an opponents aggressive strategy by forcing their attacks or he could be brutal if you were playing control and wiped the board and then let him work.
This Gideon is NOTHING like that Gideon.

I think $10 sounds like a good buy. It's close to his likely floor and if he takes off you'll make out pretty big. My prediction on the card is that he's a great way to deal with control. So he'll probably see play as a 2 of sideboard card in aggro decks. As a card he's a threat that dodges sweepers and most removal, control has a lot of trouble dealing with him. Only 5 cards can actually get rid of him and most don't see play (Magmaquake, Dreadbore, Merciless Eviction, Tribute to Hunger, and Devour Flesh). Against slow creature light decks this guy wins games.
None of that means he's going to go up, but it does mean his floor is probably around $10, so if he doesn't go up you lose nothing, but if he does go up you profit.

Oring dring and creature attacks get rid of him. Rift bounces him.
What people are neglecting to mention about his +1 is it that it is somewhat similar to the new Jaces.
I mean if you +1 him its almost like giving all their creatures -1/-0 if they choose to attack into Gideon. So it's not quite as easy to remove him via creature combat unless the opponent already has insane board presence.
Sure. He would have haste, so Summoning Sickness wouldn't apply to him anymore, and he could attack or use abilities with in their cost.
Went to a new shop from a friend's recommendation, DQ'ed for willful violation of CR 100.6b.
