So, I went to a few prereleases for RtR and pulled a few Abrupt Decays. I had no use for them and assume them are going down so I chucked them to eBay. So, I have around $50 dollars which I intend to put back into Magic. I don't need anything, except a few smaller cards and I wanted to specifically trade up for eternal.
Now, I was looking for some cards for around that value that the community feels like are solid investments. Safer bets that are likely to at least stay at that value.
My first thought is that Force of Will is usually a safe bet, but any other suggestions would be nice.
If there is a thread for this, I missed it. Feel free to redirect.
Modern season is coming and Scalding Tarn is very played in Modern. Not much chance your $50 FoW turns into MORE than $50 any time soon. $50 worth of Tarns might inflate.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.

I'm happy if the Force of Will stays the same price. I want the money I made from Abrupt Decays to turn into a trade up. I just want to get something of worth that I can trade later for what I paid if need be.
I was just curious if anyone had any other suggestions besides that one off hand.
Onslaught Fetches are good. I would also be picking up the Zendikar fetches in preparation for Modern season coming up. Since the shocklands just got reprinted, Modern is building as a format, and shocks and fetches are complementary products, I expect the demand to be somewhat higher for them as compared to last season.
If you really want to speculate, I would consider Helm of Obedience, which combos very well with the new Rest in Peace (similarly to Leyline of the Void, but Rest in Peace is much easier to hardcast and is in the same color as Enlightened Tutor).

Honestly, I'd avoid both Force of Will and Onslaught fetches, at least long term. Short term, they're both fine, but both are due for a reprint (FoW in a FTV, onslaught fetches in 2 years). They fluctuate too much for me. Original dual lands would be the main thing I'd focus on.

To be honest, I feel the same exact way. That's the only reason I was even looking for a good alternative to both. I feel the reprint of both of those are inevitable too.
I'd consider spending the money on some smaller cards that can trade well. What trades well at your local store? Can you get some of those cards inexpensively, either from an online seller, eBay, or the mtgs trade forums?
Buying something like a Force of Will will lock up your limited funds with low liquidity and limited upside. I don't see any advantage to it. I do see your point, that you want to preserve your capital, but I'd either keep it in cash or buy something that trades unusually well with your locals.
I routinely trade for cards I know I can sell for cash (Primordial Hydra, I'm lookin' at you...) and sink that money back into drafting. While it's a far cry from the speculation I used to do, on the whole it has gotten me a LOT for my money.
I know it's not exactly what you had in mind, but consider it. A combination of good trading, good playing, and a spot of good luck can help you finance your drafting and grow your own collection.

I guess a Jace, The Mind Sculptor is another safe bet...
