I dont think it is possible For caw blade in legacy. Sure Squadron hawk is CA its just that it is poor for its mana cost. Its competing with Serra Aveneger for the spot. Also basically caw-blade in legacy already exists in the form of UW tempo.
I have to agree with you. The cost drivers have to be EDH, SFM and a few other decks. Maybe the speculation that SoFi and SoLaS will be in M12.
Ya at first L&S was on the rise jumping from around $15 to $30 many individuals along with myself wondered why F&I did not see the same jump and sat at around 15-20.
Now F&I is being bought for $25 by SCG.
All of these price spikes are absolutely insane, me and my 2 buddies got extremely lucky because we decided to get into legacy about 2 months back. We are still missing a good amount of cards but we successfully picked up some sets of solid staples that have near doubled in value since we got them.
It is crazy to think that we bought judge promo wastelands for $40 about a month ago, now you will be lucky to find a normal tempest wasteland for that price.
Also I honestly do not think that the price increases will turn players away from legacy. Legacy players or people planning to play legacy know exactly what they are getting into. The price of legacy decks were never cheap.
I've tracked several of these 'omg the sky is falling due to rising prices' threads here on MTGS and MOTL, and here is the question I am EXTREMELY interested in, esp after seeing a couple of the same individuals overstate the prices of these cards at time of posting: Do any of you guys who are shouting the loudest about how prices have increased oh so much own a large stash of the cards in question?
Don't get me wrong, I have a good number of extras of these cards and I don't mind seeing their prices increase at all, but it seems to me extremely counter-productive to keep hyping these if you have yet to acquire them ^^
This doesn't make any sense. Umezawa's Jitte is better in just about every deck in every format, aside from Legacy Stoneforge Mystic builds where Sword is maybe a bit better. Jitte is $16. This makes NO sense at all.
This is probably what happened, as dumb as it sounds. Sword sold out in all but one store that had them for some absurdly high price. Some other store saw that and priced their newly acquired Swords at the same price, and pretty soon everybody got confused. That's the only explanation.

LOL. It's called basic "supply and demand".
And Swords is much better than Jitte in EDH, because of the protection.
And Swords is much better than Jitte in EDH, because of the protection.
Exactly. Tournament crowds may potentially value Jitte Higher, but in the end the casual/EDH crowd values the swords higher. Plus Jitte was printed recently as a GP (or something) promo, which helped add to its supply a good amount as well. Also prior to the stoneforge mystic builds in legacy, the swords werent (as far as I could tell) run in legacy. Now they are, and that demand is pushing their price higher and higher.
And Swords is much better than Jitte in EDH, because of the protection.
That's not basic supply and demand. On occasion, 1 or 2 stores have a completely ridiculous price for card: for example, Phylactery Lich (a $1 card) was on sale for $34 in one store for no good reason. That's probably what happened with Sword. Even if it sells out at $18-$25 which is what it was going for, there's no chance it suddenly jumps to $55 for no good reason.
How much would a chinese Sword of Fire and Ice and a Chinese Sword of Light and Shadow go for? I've been digging through sites and I can't seem to find a price for them. I appreciate any help.
This can't be a coincidence. SoFI has been played in Legacy and EDH for awhile. Stoneforge has been out for what, a year now? Now some random week it skyrockets. It's not like Candelabra where a winning deck featured the card. Not only that, but any deck that wants it wants only a singleton usually (EDH or part of a Stoneforge package) unlike say Wasteland or FoW, whose rise is semi-understandable. I think there's definitely something going on behind the scenes. Something must've set it off.

Did it sell? If not, and there is no demand at that price. It's an illogical argument because 1 single store doesn't set the market. A store can set a card at $1M if it wants, but that doesn't set the price on the card.
Sword of Fire and Ice was already going up to around $20 prior to the jump. Same thing for Light and Shadow. So many people (myself included) decided that we should go ahead and buy the Swords now in case they keep going up. That dried up the supply and bam, next thing you know, the remaining Swords are at $30-35.

Due to the rise in "price" a lot more might end up on ebay or the guys who want to cash in quickly. The price isn't that high. Ebay still has them between $35-40 now in the 50's, and earlier this week it was $25-30. THe reason for the recent spike is because of the stores prices everyone wants to cash in. The legacy/EDH mania is making everyone scramble and the prices are chaotic since no one wants to be left paying 2-3x what they would have 6 months ago on these cards.
In long term SOFI might reach $40+ regularly when the commander precons get released and i'm sure stores are speculating it to rise, however nothings behind the scenes. Everyones just paranoid at missing the next boat in old staples so prices are going up everywhere. If you have an extensive legacy staple collection, nows the time to cash in.

NO IT ISN'T! That would be the absolute worste financial move one could make right now. We've got 32 SCG tournaments and 2 Grand Prixs for Legacy this year. You think the price of a Legacy Collection has capped out now??? In March??? No way. We aren't anywhere close to the ceiling on these cards. Not by a long shot.
Over the next three years, depending on how popular EDH really ends up being, prices on eternal cards will jack up to silly expensive levels. Don't believe me? Ask the Vintage community what the cap on eternal staples looks like. When you have Vintage, Legacy, EDH, Casual, and Cube Drafters all after the same cards, you are looking at a price boom, not a plateau. There is every reason in the world to believe that prices for eternal staples will increase at least another 50% or more before we get a leveling off.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
Lots of detailed posts, and the main fact is EDH is the reason for the rise.
If they're 28 million (give or take 30 mil) that play this game, and 26 million play casual and want all the swords for their edh deck/s (note most have 3-9 decks)...yep that said it all and I didn't even need a graph to express it.
I don't see any of the swords dropping once the wildfire that's EDH takes on its full bloom this summer.
Oh and Sword of Light and Shadow has far more value in leading the herd with regards to the swords, just a better card in EDH as it sits currently and the one I would focus on getting or holding onto now!!!
S.M.
I must be an idiot savant at buying magic cards. Every time I buy one for EDH/Casual (that's all I play) I end up with a card that spikes in value. Time spiral, the swords, stoneforge... jeez.
I now predict that Mindless Null is going to skyrocket. EVERYBODY GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN. *runs in weird direction*
I had a ton of these staples already. I really enjoyed watching my collection literally skyrocket overnight.
I think a few of these "staples" are going to be reprinted in pre-cons which could hurt their value (I'm really thinking that Sensei's Divining Top or any of the Time Spiral (set) staples could be printed in the commander decks)

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."

That is essentially what every single person that has been playing EDH for more than 6 months feels. When you are buying a huge number of DIFFERENT cards you will score when they spike and when there are a ton of awesome cards that do crazy things "but are just a bit too slow for X" EDH loves them. But, then something is done to either speed up X or make the slowness irrelevant the cards go crazy.
EDH allowed SOFI's scarcity to slowly increase in secret, and then eventually everybody realized it. That, along with it starting to see a bit more Legacy play in SFM decks is what finally caused the jump.

I highly doubt they will reprint them in m12, we do not need 5 swords in standard for 2 years

Agreed. I find the idea very unlikely. SoFI would be very over-powering in Standard.

no one runs 4x sword of Fire and ice. Its usually a one of. same with jitte.
even then, people still run more copies of jitte than SOFI.
