I currently have 7 force of wills. I got them all the same way, when I was a kid in grade school I bought one box of Alliances and opened it. I never traded them away.
Currently a box of Alliances is $300 to $350.
So . . .
1. By doing some basic math, I'm guessing I was insanely lucky. How many force of wills should you expect out of a box?
2. Is it true that because of the way alliances was packaged, half the boxes have zero FoWs, the other half have double?
it depends on the print run id guess. almost all of the boxes ive opened have only had 2 of each uncommon that was considered desirable. for instance, ive only ever opened 2 gftt from besieged. my darksteel only had 2 aether vials (and consequently only 2 of 4 other uncommons that were over $.80) with similar behavior in other boxes as well
For what it's worth, I've only ever opened one box of Alliances and I pulled three copies of Force of Will from it. Based on what other people who collected were telling me at the time, I did pretty well to even see three of them. You must have gotten insanely lucky!
Not the hijack the thread, but on a similar topic what's the odds with wastelands in a tempest booster box? Seeing as Wastelands are commons compared to Force of Will which is an uncommon.

Wasteland is uncommon; with Tempest being a large set, you're likely to see two in a box on average.

I drafted a tempest box. My group was unlucky it had 0 wastelands. Buying boxes for old cards is rarely cost effective. Unless you draft boxes.

As far as Tempest goes, I only pulled 3 Wasteland out of my last booster box, yet somehow got 4 out of a starter box (12 starter decks). I thought there was no way something like that should have happened!
The odds of pulling a wasteland from a box of tempest are about 1 per box or so. (If memory serves) big sets back then had 110 rares 110 uncommons 110 commons and 20 basics (350 cards total). With 3 uncommons per pack thats 108 uncommons per box, so once again, odds are on average there will be 1 per box. As with all things though distributions are never 100% equal, so there may be several boxes with none and a random box with 2 or 3. All in all you should only assume that you MIGHT get 1 out of a box though.

There was a common rumor at the time that you got "better" cards out of Starter decks. Of course how would they know that in the future the best card would be Uncommon.
Keep in mind that cracking starter decks you actually get 12 more uncommons per box too plus a couple $$ worth of land.
I really really miss tournament packs. I wish WotC would go back to them. They could sell them as "draft packs" or "sealed packs" that had the same 45/90 cards as a set of boosters. It's a heck of a lot easier to crack cases of starters over cases of boosters.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
When I got back into magic I couldnt believe that starter decks were gone. Sealed Deck just had something to it. Booster Drafts are ok, but a sealed deck and 2 boosters to build from it, was like your own cards, not dealing with someone's passed junk. Even the booster version of sealed deck just doesnt have the same feel.

Wizards got rid of them because they didnt sell well enough to warrant keeping them around vs just streamlining everything into just the booster packs. Cost cutting and streamlining is a common occurance for many businesses that are trying to keep from having to raise prices for their product and still keep profits up and costs down.
A friend of mine opened a box of Alliances a few months ago and opened 2. I opened a box of Korean Tempest about a year ago and I pulled 3 Wastelands. Anytime your looking for an uncommon from a 300+ card set, i would never expect more than 2-3. However, you can get lucky and maybe get 4-5, or very unlucky and get 0. Either way, opening product for product is not a winning proposition when boxes cost 300+
