I was wondering if we would get those potential great storyline novels that have seemed to be passed over! First the Wizards war started by Lim-Dul in 3046. Secondly the Planeswalker war shortly before the Phyrexian Invasion. Looks like these storylines have some great characters to carry these novels. They don't even need to put cards to these storylines, put them out as stand along novels. Have the regular books come out regulary and inbetween the ongoing cycle release these books. I just like how these novels would sound, what MTG is all about, DEULING WIZARDS!!!
For the current creative, the era of the old-planeswalkers are over. They don't even want to touch on anything on it anymore. Well they did dwell on it for a block, but it was to shut them out good.
You could have better luck if you asked for the CRAPs (i.e. Chandra, Garruk etc.etc.)

Anyway, I think Dommermuth has stated that books that aren't tie-ins to the current card set just don't sell well and aren't worth the investment for them to produce, so we'll probably never see novels based on those events unless a future block takes them on.
Anyway, he didn't say "horrible idea," he said "poor business decision" or something to that effect. I have no idea how well The Thran sold, though I imagine he was referring specifically to the string of anthologies from around that time period.
But they weren't overpowered cheese. Urza almost died fighting a flying metal bird with a buzz saw. And even if they were overpowered cheese, I'd still prefer that to the Wheeled Warriors--the blandest representation of the five colors of Magic I've yet to run across. Fire-Girl! Demon-Girl! Hunter-Man!
Planeswalkers are meant to be background characters. They've shown up in the storyline as main characters twice. The first time was when the continuity team actually devoted mountains of thought to its storyline, and the results were the most successful Magic books to date. The second time was when Brady got a bug up his ass and decided to get rid of them. If they stay in the background, they work just fine.

Planeswalkers were never overpowered because there always was something more powerful than them: Multani, Gaea, The Shard, and other planeswalkers. And besides, "With great power comes great responsibility" (Uncle Ben Parker).
I think that even with whole story arcs with them as central characters, the books turned out awesome. And it's great creativity for the author to imagine how a semi-god would react in certain situations.

Common sense isn't so common... Thanks to PotN at Solar Flare Studios for the awesome sig!
Agreed. Having godlike characters as protagonists is going to present a challenge for any writer. And it was a challenge that, with the Weatherlight Saga, I feel worked rather well. Do I want to read about it every set? No, it gets old after a while. But I don't want creative to come up with a string of BS excuses as to why they "had to get rid of them." Please.

The main problem with there being world hopping mega-powerful do-gooders is that everything will either be way below them or they will handle it themselves, and everyone else involved will be tools.
This is probably why they were offed.

The guy who found the new art for shock and other 10th edition cards on the wizards site.
Butcher of Words.
Planeswalkers worked for the storylines for a while, but there's only so much you can do to near-omnipotent beings; we've had 'walker duels, we've had 'walker betrayals, we've had Yawgmoth, we've had 'walkers converted into bombs, and we've had a false god more powerful than 'walkers created when three random women got chopped in half at the same time. They had to come up with something new.
I don't think you can just sweep planeswalkers under the rug. They are pretty much synonymous with MTG, hell, we even have planeswalker cards now. At least you still have Bolas out there and strong mages like Jodas. There gearing up for something big, and the 'walkers will be back to straighten things out.
To me, the power level of the new 'walkers is underwhelming. Barrin was stronger than them! Another thing: THE NEOWALKERS AREN'T EVEN PART OF THE STORYLINE! So here's the summary: WotC kills Planeswalkers because they are overpowered and replaces them with crappier versions, and then opts to not use them. Yes yes, there are still more books to come, but it's just common logiccal sense to have them be in the flavor of the set/block they're released in. In addition, it's "good marketing".

I also wonder if it's good marketing to have your fans foaming at the mouth all over the Internet without bothering to address it, then acting like our opinions don't matter in the slightest bit. I can't see Wal-Mart or Pepsi doing that. Strange.

Actually, there is a meaning....
1. Neowalkers (first term to appear)
2. Bradywalkers
3. Planescrawlers
4. Wheeled Warriors
5. Fakewalkers
6. CRAP (Constantly Really Annoying Planescrawlers)
7. WTF (Wheeled Transplanar Fakewalkers)

It annoys me how people won't stop complaining like it's the end of Magic, though.
(And watch how 10 people will now descend upon this thread to post about how it is the end of Magic, in five, four, three...)
