So, in the scenario, I have a serra ascendant and 29 life. If I swing with serra ascendant and it gets blocekd by a 2/2, does serra ascendant die or does it get a P/T bonus before checking that it has lethal damage?
My thinking is that lifelink is not a triggered ability, so it happens at the same time as damage.
A similar situation:
I have a 1/1 with lifelink, and there are 5 1/1s attacking me. I'm at 4 life. If I block one of the incoming attackers, do I still die (4 damage unblocked against 4 life)? Or do I gain the life before checking if I am dead (leaving me at 1 life)?
You gain the life as part of the results of damage. So Serra Ascendant deals 1 damage to the 2/2, and is dealt 2 damage, while you gain one life. When state-based actions are checked, the game sees you at 30 life, the Serra Ascendant as a 6/6 with 2 damage on it, and the 2/2 with 1 damage on it. Nothing happens.
You'll survive. You simultaneously lose 4 life and gain 1 life, leaving you at 1.

What do you mean by WHEN? When are state-based actions checked?
SBA are checked when a player would receive priority, aka after the damage but before the players can do anything
State based actions are checked any time a player would receive priority and before any triggered abilities would go on the stack.
