2 player game
Besides land, Player A controls a Geist of Saint Traft. Player B controls a Detention Sphere which has exiled Player A's Oblivion Ring (the permanent that returned to the battlefield when the Oblivion Ring was exiled has already left the battlefield). Neither player controls any other permanents.
On Player A's turn:
Player A casts Sublime Archangel
In Response, Player B casts Lost in the Mist to counter Player A's spell and return the Detention Sphere to his own hand.
Player A has no response, and the Lost in the Mist resolves.
Will Player A have to (even be able to) exile his own Geist when his Oblivion Ring returns to the battlefield?
I had a player argue that since the O-Ring was returning due to Player B's D-Sphere leaving the battlefield, that Player B was in control of the O-Ring and it couldn't target the Geist due to its hexproof ability.
I ruled that Player A would indeed have to exile his Geist because there is no other legal target for the O-Ring's ability.
Player B didn't cast the O-Ring...it's Player A's O-Ring returning to the battlefield when Player B returned his own D-Sphere to his hand when he cast Lost in the Mist
So if player A control a hexproof creature, player B can cast oblivion ring to exile that hexproof creature?
No, because player B is an opponent of player A, so abilities controlled by Player B can't target the Geist.
In the situation described in the original post, it was Player A's Oblivion Ring exiling Player A's geist. Hexproof doesn't stop your creature from being the target of abilities you control.
The detention sphere is then subsequently removed from the battlefield bringing the Oblivion ring back under player A's control.
Player A then puts the triggered ability from oblivion ring on the stack and as they control both the oblivion ring and the geist they have to target the geist of st traft

They are going to have to exile their own Geist of Saint Traft.

No they can't and that is not what is happening in this case.
Here an oblivion ring that is owned by player A has been removed by a detention sphere.
The detention sphere is then subsequently removed from the battlefield bringing the Oblivion ring back under player A's control.
Player A then puts the triggered ability from oblivion ring on the stack and as they control both the oblivion ring and the geist they have to target the geist of st traft
