Hey there, so we're in a commander game and we have a situation that we haven't been able to figure out. I am playing a Zedruu deck and I have a planeswalker. Now my opponent is attacking the planeswalker. Can I donate that planeswalker via Zedruu's ability before damage is dealt and have myself soak up the damage instead? Or is the damage still redirected to the planeswalker?
Damage to planeswalkers from attacking creatures isn't redirected, planeswalkers are chosen to be attacked during the declare attackers step (when creatures are declared as attackers you declare if they are attacking a planeswalker just like you declare which player they attack in a multiplayer game). The damage won't be dealt to anything if they change controller mid-combat.
If a planeswalker changes controllers, it is removed from combat. The creatures that were attacking it will still be attacking, but if they were unblocked, they won't deal any damage in combat.
506.4. A permanent is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, if its controller changes, if it phases out, if an effect specifically removes it from combat, if it's a planeswalker that's being attacked and stops being a planeswalker, or if it's an attacking or blocking creature that regenerates (see rule 701.12) or stops being a creature. A creature that's removed from combat stops being an attacking, blocking, blocked, and/or unblocked creature. A planeswalker that's removed from combat stops being attacked.
506.4c If a creature is attacking a planeswalker, removing that planeswalker from combat doesn't remove that creature from combat. It continues to be an attacking creature, although it is attacking neither a player nor a planeswalker. It may be blocked. If it is unblocked, it will deal no combat damage.

Scientists have calculated that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one. But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.

Alright, thanks for clearing it up.
