I was playing against my buddy who had a Vampire Hexmage out. I had Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet out with a Blade of the Bloodchief on him with two +1/+1 counters on him. I paid 3 black and tapped him to kill the Hexmage, he sacrificed the Hexmage in response. I said I would lose my current 2 counters, but gain another 2 since it went to the graveyard, he said I would just lose all my counters. How does this situation resolve?
If you play it out we have a stack order that looks like this:
1. Kalita's attempts to destroy the Hexmage
2. Hexmage is Sacrificed to remove all counters from Kalitas
3. Blade of the Bloodchief triggers on Hexmage being put into the grave.
granted no other spells are abilities are played, the effects would resolve in reverse order:
3. Blade of the Bloodchief resolves, granting Kalitas 2 aditional +1/+1 counters.
2. Vampire Hexmage's Ability resolves removing any counters from Kalitas.
1. Kalitas' ability is countered since it no longer has a legal target.
The end result would be a 5/5 kalitas with no counters and a dead Hexmage.
Thanks for your help! <3

So I wouldn't get the token either, I imagine, since the sacrifice means I didn't technically destroy it?
