I thought a creature can only deal lethal damage to another creature. So wouldn't the controller of the Rhox gain 1 life, since it was blocked by only a single 1/1 creature and doesn't have trample?

Nope, it will deal 4 damage to the creature. It assigns damage equal to its power, which is 4. It deals the damage it assigned.
310.2a. Each attacking creature and each blocking creature will assign combat damage equal to its power. Creatures with power less than 0 assign 0 combat damage.
310.4. Combat damage resolves as an object on the stack. When it resolves, it's all dealt at once, as originally assigned.

Nope, it will deal 4 damage to the creature. It assigns damage equal to its power, which is 4. It deals the damage it assigned.
