Ok, I suspect that Now I Know My ABC's simply treats foreign cards as though they were printed in american but I would like to check that a deck based on the card with no other american cards (or german/french as they have english letters too) would still work.
what about they afformentioned european languages? does the fact that they have english letters make a difference? if so, how does an umlout/accent effect things (that's the french sort of written accent by the way, a silly voice should never change the course of the game (ok, not without laughing hyena)).
On the one hand, foreign versions of a card ought to be played the same as any English version of the same card...but on the other hand, the card does specifically specify the English alphabet. Thanks to World-Bottling Kit and the other cards that care about expansion symbols, we do have examples of different printings of cards having different functions, at least in silver-bordered land anyway. My inclination is to say that non-English cards have different letters in their names and should be counted as such for the purposes of Now I Know My ABC's, but I'd consider it a judgment call.
has to be the english alphabet...jap[anees cards never start with letters from the english alphabet so they wont do anything toward "Now i know my ABC's
anyone going to confirm the fact that I can't use romanji names?
"Facts" are pretty fluid things in un-world.
I'd say cards only count if their names have a letter that is clearly the same as an English letter, but if you can convince your play group to let Japanese cards count as their English equivalent then go for it.

romanji is neither proper kanji japanese or the "english equivilent". it is kanji japanese, written as phonetically as possible, using english letters.
seeing as romanji is still japanese (and even the same words as opposed to normal translation) I thought I might have more of a case for that than the using of the english version.
oh and facts don't realy get weird until the boundry between the worlds start to blur...
You could certainly make a good argument for counting the printed names of German, Spanish, French, etc. permanents for Now I Know My ABC's, but I don't think the same can hold true for cards printed in Japanese, Korean, Russian, etc. because those cards do not contain letters in the English alphabet. You can translate those words phonetically into the English alphabet, and it is done on occasion for all such languages, but because those "translations" are not printed on the card they probably should not count toward your ABC's. But in this case, as in any Un-case not previously addressed by Rosewater, the final decision is up to your playgroup.

Can I count cards in a language other than English?
Yes, but only letters from the English alphabet count. This means Japanese and Chinese cards aren't all that useful.
ok, you've confirmed it then.
what about if I somehow get a japanese version of now I know my ABC's?
how do umlouts and accents effect it? (though I suspect putting on a funny voice makes no difference...)

Not only would it be unfun, but it would be very dumb and useless...
BTW, that's one of the few rares I have from Unhinged... I actually had an Unhinged deck, but I never got to win with that card. It REALLY is a Johnny card that needs tight combos to work... and be fun.

it's not the best of cards when it comes to game winning...
IMO it's all or nothing when using foriegn abc's deck. if the other cards are foriegn, it should be too.
lol, that is definately cheating but doesn't actualy break any rules.
oh wait, altered cards are only allowed if they have the same name and cost.
there goes that idea, though it would have been silly (and unfair :().

do I take the romanji name or the printed kanji name?
if it is the kanji name I assume that doesn't realy work as kanji aren't in the english alphabet.
that's cruel.
now I can't have a deck nobody understands!
Sure you can. Try using Ambiguity or Bureaucracy.

nonsensical wordyness =/= ununderstandable.
I for one can understand those 2 perfectly. no difficulty at all.

Unhinged was only printed in English.

Not without my help anyway!
I have been doing conversions as of late ...
Don't worry, draco your request hasn't fallen on deaf ears, I have just been extremely busy lately.
Also have been lax with my PMs a bit
it's no fun if ABC's is the only english card...
