I know there's no actual ruling on this, but I was wondering if a general guideline for a deck to be "safe" could be provided.
What are good guidelines concerning Foils in a deck? It has been said "older" foils are thicker than normal cards, do newer ones have this problem as well? In my decks (I play legacy), I try to have all my 8th Edition+ cards in foil versions, and all others non foil, though sometimes white bordered cards can be distracting, so I may resort to foils of the card from FNM. To be one the safe side, what do you guys think would be the optimal mix of non foil, old foil, new foils in a deck that uses all 3 kinds?
Yes, you can still tell the difference with sleeves on the cards. As a general rule, make sure you can't tell a pattern in your files (ie. if all your lands are foils it's not a good thing). FNM foils are perfectly legal.

Hey, you! Yeah, you behind the computer screen! You're unconstitutional.
My deck is almost all foil, only few cards that is too expensive to be foil I had to use it non-foil >.<.
I played at FNM sometimes and most of the guys I played with don't mind with my deck.

I love playing Mono-colored deck almost all my deck are Mono ^^
Who says Mono-color are not good at Winning!? ^^"
FNM is pretty much always going to be okay with things like that, it being the most casual of tournaments, most people don't mind.
The thickness of foils, though present, isn't detectable without some serious looking, particularly through sleeves. The big issue is that, as I'm sure most people have noticed, foils tend to curve concavely on the vertical axis as they age. This seems to occur with cards that see heavy play as well as cards that sit in binders and boxes. Even with 20+ nonfoil cards stacked on top, if that 21st is the only foil in the deck, it is noticable by the slight gap between it and the next card.
This is why Sutherlands mentioned the land issue, as this could very easily be considered marking the deck, intentional or not.
Does the same idea apply to Alpha/Beta lands? All of the Plains I play are Alpha. I use sleeves of course , and I can't tell them from other cards in my deck, but for States could this be an issue? I know they all tap for :symw:, but I love my Alpha Plains!

Check with the head judge of the event. He or she should be able to point out anything that might be a concern regarding the lands you are using, or even if they are marked from the beginning. It won't completely negate the possibility of there being issues later on, but at the very least you can show the head judge what your deck looks like and help identify any issues at the very beginning of the event.

Using sleeves also aides in proper randomized shuffling.
So I suggest to use sleeves and not worry about foil composition.
(Are FNM foils legal though? You haven't said if you're just using guidelines for friendly games or competitive play).
I'm looking for guidelines into competitive play, so anything information would be helpful.
