I activate the second ability on Vizkopa Guildmage. I Devour Flesh myself or my ally. My ally/myself sacrifice a creature with odd power and toughness.
Our team gains that amount of life (odd) equal to toughness, but I technically only gain half of it, for the sake of the activated ability, correct?
Does it round up/down? Does that change depending on who had sacrificed from devour flesh?
(I'm aware the second ability hits each opponent, but I'm curious about the rounding up/down).
You gain whatever the toughness was of the sacrificed creature (for the sake of argument, you sac the guildmage). Then the triggered effect created will go off, and EACH opponent will lose 2 life, causing their shared life total to drop 4 points. There is no rounding here, you gain just 2.
810.9. Damage, loss of life, and gaining life happen to each player individually. The result is applied to the team's shared life total.
Your teammate gaining life does not count as you gaining life. If your teammate gains life, they'll gain the life, and then it's applied to your team's life total. However, that won't count as you gaining life.
So if you activate the Guildmage's ability, then cast Devour Flesh targeting yourself, the Guildmage's delayed triggered ability will trigger and each of your opponents will lose that much life (for instance, if you gained 3 life, then each opponent on the opposing team loses 3 life, so the team loses a total of 6 life). But if you play the Flesh targeting your teammate, your teammate is gaining life, not you, so the Guildmage's ability will not trigger.

Scientists have calculated that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one. But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.
Totally slipped my mind. Yeah, if you (the player activating the guildmage) do not gain life, but your team mate does, the effect will not trigger since you weren't the one to actually gain any life.

Also, my head judge was wrong on both counts then.
