Sam Stoddard's article echoes a lot of what many Magic authors wrote and what a lot of forums have discussed this week since the B&R announcement. He has more detailed information and thought process on how and why WotC banned cards in both formats. He also goes over a lot of what has been said in other forums regarding health and enjoyment of Standard. Finally, his acknowledgement towards the end about creatures today being superior to spells and that WotC is working to balance the issue gives some optimism for future Standards.
Gives Modern some hope too, because without some balance being injected into Standard finally, there was no hope Modern could even begin to control itself.

That is great news. I grouse about the current state of Magic often, but I am genuinely glad to hear this. I can understand, lets say, a "sentient" creature having some crazy abilities, and absolutely a Legendary, but why the hell does a rhino Syphon Soul?

We sort of saw the problem start to emerge when Collected Company hit the scene and creatures literally became like spells. To this day we still have that card haunting modern.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
Meh, it's a 4 mana card, countered by U. I don't know that it's that common or oppressive in Modern.
The real problem a card like Collected Company has in modern is that it forces you to run 28 creatures. 28 creatures+24 lands means you only have a maximum of 8 slots for interaction, and ideally less than that so that you can also Chord.
The basic skeleton for the deck just leaves it soft to a lot of things. But in standard where you're not running another set of tutors and interaction is already weak and overcost, you can just throw more creatures in at little to no loss in value.
CoCo will never be oppressive in Modern, but it might one day become oppressive in Frontier if that format lasts. Unless some better removal gets printed.

The problem isn't that it is mechanically an issue in modern, it's that the card is almost universally hated from it's time in standard.

Is there even a Tier 2 deck running it?
