So I had one of those moments in the title today as I was looking through my old fat pack boxes and limited openings from my college days and while there were valuable cards in there, there were other ones that just made me wonder "where did that come from?". Namely, I was digging through a phyrexia fat pack box I had and found Kor and Kithkin soldier tokens. This actually perplexes me because I never played during zendikar, so I have no idea why I have kor soldiers. Then there is the kithkin one which is a real mystery because that I would have expected to find in one of my older boxes.
Anyone else ever run into one of those situations with cards and just sort of wonder how that happened? If so what was the card? It could be a token or anything really.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
I found an Orim's Chant I needed in a box just yesterday while building my Depala Commander deck. I think it was from my old Zedruu deck I had taken apart that had a Sunforger package, but I'm not sure.
A mono-green infect deck from back when New Phyrexia was current. It was within white flip-top box that was crammed inside of a Planar Chaos fat pack box that was in a backpack in the back of my closet.
Realized I had a Angel of Serenity in foil, just as I was building my angel tribal EDH was such a treat, it was behind some cards I just threw into my binder. Nothing too big but hey, a bonus is a bonus

So back in late 2011/early 2012, we're going through this one guy's collection. He has this one fatpack box there which he opens up and there is a bunch of unsleeved cards. We come upon at least 20 Damnations, a Candelabra of Tawnos, and a bunch of other cards... He's just like "Oh."
I was building Alesha EDH and wondering how difficult it would be to actually find a foil Fiend Hunter (I don't buy online) and then when I was flipping one of my binders... although it was less of a question of "How did I get it" (common sense probably screamed "from one of the boosters back then") and more of "I had it all this time?"
I think history repeated itself for the same deck when it came to Leonin Relic-Warder except it was in one of my friend's binders, so that case was "I went through so many of other people's binders only to find out it was way easier for me all this while" (said friend doesn't collect/use foils).
Fortunately for me both times happened before I actually found one at a LGS/someone else's binder.
I have a tendency to remember my rares/mythics a lot better (although it's still pleasant to find out actual quantities one owns such as exactly 4 Death's Shadow when the deck popped out in Modern), but most of my surprises tend to come from common/uncommon cards, especially in foil.
