For as long as I can remember, I have proclaimed myself to be a die hard blue based control player.
Well, over at the Legacy forum there is a poll asking players what their favorite combo based decks are. I looked through the list and had no idea how many I have played or am considering playing, like Doomsday and Spanish Inquisition.
And then if finally hit me.
I'm really a die hard combo player. There is no way around it. To me, there is nothing like trying to go off turn 1 or 2 with a glass cannon that can blow up in your face, either through a well placed Force of Will or simply killing myself in the process.
Suddenly, 19 years of self assurance that I was indeed a control player was shot to hell when I realized how much I really loved combo.
In short, I was lying to myself for years.
In fact, the only thing I can confidently say about myself as a player is that, in general, aggro kind of bores me, with some exceptions.
So tell me, what about YOU have you recently discovered that has surprised you?
I actually don't think it would make for an interesting conversation at all. These sort of open-ended "tell me your story" threads always end up with people tripping over themselves to one-up the previous story with very little "conversation" taking place.
I actually don't think it would make for an interesting conversation at all. These sort of open-ended "tell me your story" threads always end up with people tripping over themselves to one-up the previous story with very little "conversation" taking place.
If someone chooses to do that, oh well. I like to believe that people can actually have an interesting conversation and not be so negative about it.
That your post adds nothing to the conversation itself is ironic, as it only proves your point. People will do what they can to be negative and derail threads, just because that's the way people are.
Still, I'm going to try to be positive about this thread. If you choose not to be, you can simply ignore it.
It's not really so much that you were lying to yourself OP, it's more like you simply discovered an unknown part of yourself. The same thing happen to me a couple of years ago. I was a die-hard Combo player that discovered that he defaulted to Control Archetypes in the absence of Combo decks. Thats the key, don't think of this new revelation as "Ive been lying to myself for years" instead see it as "I've just discovered a piece of myself that I never knew existed."

I played G/W RestoTusk for much of this seasons standard. Took my deck a 4-3 record at my first GP. Decided to switch it up and went to Esper Control. A month later I have almost completely sworn off any aggro/midrangy decks.
For me I have come to enjoy completely locking down my opponent. After playing a control really for the first time, smashing face with your biggest meanest creatures seems....well....boring.
here recently i discovered that i dislike many decks with a solid theme. playing the same thing over and over with one goal is boring (except for my vintage oath lol)
i own 3 decks that are super fun to play because they are different every time. birthing pod with one of creatures, a 4 color board control, and a token deck with many one ofs and a variety of different token interactions.
i didn't realize it till i created my birthing pod deck, but a deck that is different every game is what makes a good deck in my opinion. it's those decks that never get taken apart because it's like having multiple decks in one
Back when i first started playing in Rav/TS and Rav/Kamigawa standard all i played was blue based control, usually U/W/G or U/G. I quit the game since my local place to play closed down, and started playing again when RtR came out.
Now I'm all about that red deck wins and am having more fun than ever.

On an internet forum? Yeah, right. Everyone here is definitely well-spoken and mature.
I like green the most but after reviewing the colors of each of my decks, I found out that most of my decks contain red! I just like the aggressive nature of red. What was less surprising: out of the twelve decks that I own, only two use blue mana

I'm pretty certain that I'm a midrange/control player. I love dropping 3-5 drop creatures with value/utility, and I love countering/spot removing/sweeping at any given chance.
Though I love combo, the truth is I just like speed. Extremely fast aggro decks also do the trick for me. I like to make sure even god is late to my games.
My favorite decks are any decks that are bant colored, I play Bant in legacy, Bant in modern,Bant in EDH and I'm sure if I played standard i would play bant. Though I also love Burn. Which I play in legacy.

I generally don't play control with paper magic, but on magic online i have some control builds I like. I am also able to play burn decks as though they were control decks when I need to do so.
and my legacy deck is combo elves, which i think is very fun
Hated green, got stomped one night at FNM with my blue white.. Decided to turn it into bant. Now sometimes I pray to top deck a green card. I've done much better now, even taking on some vintage players for fun.
Still no tusk in it though, I refuse to play him, Resto, or snap!

...not only is the total number of players expanding very quickly, but at the same time a greater and greater number of those players are being pushed to only desire a small subset of the available cards. These combined forces drastically increase demand for those cards and cause the values of just those specific cards to often balloon out of proportion.
Like you, LBS, I have played for many (16) years. I thought myself a johnny because I loved cards that needed one or two others to make them 'work'. I have a great deal of love for combo.
However, when looking through my decks, 3/4 of them are black or have black in them for removal and destruction.
I LOVE CONTROL.
I knew I enjoyed it, I just didn't know how much. To everyone else I played it was apparent. This revelation hit me about a year ago and I have embraced that part of myself to make my decks better. I play casual, but have recently been taken by a budget Legacy Pox build. I am seriously excited about it more than I have been for most decks I put together!
I am happy to see others discover things about themselves as players, especially when they are as seasoned as you and I. Good on you!

I play RDW/Barely Boros partly because I'm good with the deck, partly because I'm a smoker. I like my matches ending in 15 minutes so I can have time for a cigarette. Sadly enough, it's also the reason why I can't play control at long tournaments.
I believed I asked in your last personal crisis thread if you were confident in your personal color alignment?

This is why I started playing magic in the first place. It wasn't PT aspirations just making noobs cry by doing things that are perfectly fair.

Should make for an interesting conversation.
This may count more as being a hypocrite than a liar.
