I just opened up a gatecrash fatpack, and I think I have to agree with a lot what others are saying about the boxes and fatpacks. Why did Wizards have to make this set a non-spike set so much? Most of the good cards are mythics, but the real problem is that there are no stable rares of any kind - which is so unlike Return to Ravnica.
In my fatpack, I didn't even get a single mythic out of the 9 packs. My rares were:
It's pretty sad when the single Boros Charm I got is worth more than almost all of these cards. The only other uncommon that I got that is playable is an Experiment One, and it's not even that good IMO.
I'm very disappointed with the fat pack, having dodged every mythic and shockland.
At least the book is nice, and the extra box is welcome. I hope Wizards doesn't make a set like this in a long while. It's very disappointing.
Is this thread real? How can you complain about random luck.
If you wanted specific cards you should have bought them instead. The set is totally fine.. just becuase you opened a crap fat pack doesn't mean it's bad, lmao.

I pre-ordered this fat pack a long time ago, along with 4 boros reckoners when they were really inexpensive. From this point on, I plan on buying singles, although I'm not really sure what to buy at this point besides lands.
The set design is not fine though. The rares are bad. Even 5 junk primordials are taking up a huge amount of space in the set. All of the rare cipher cards are unplayable, which is more garbage. There's just not enough rares in the set that one would realistically want out of the 53 rares. RtR had 3x as many desirable/playable rares.

Sorry that not every set can be designed just for Spikey players that only play trash forma-err standard.
Get over it, different cards are made to appeal to different people.
Also your opening post makes little sense. The hell do you mean "which is so unlike gatecrash"?

Purely a newcomer's question, but why do so many people seem to have a problem with standard? I do understand that it's limiting, but it seems to be the staple of FNM in my area at least...it's either that or booster draft. If that's the case, what does one do when that is the only format available at FNM on a routine basis?

Because Standard is boring.
OK, without being heavily biased, many people dislike the relatively low power level of Standard, and they don't like how Standard cards often tank hard in price after rotating out.
try opening 3 rtr boosters with conjured currency in all of them....and 1 of them had a foil...CONJURED CURRENCY zomg playset!!
As horrible as this is from a value perspective, I think we can all go ahead and say that is hilarious. If I bought 3 boosters and ended up with a playset of conjured currency or search the city, I know I would laugh at myself before cursing my rotten luck.
Maybe I'm in the minority but I was disappointed that the Gatecrash booklet was printed wrong- there is a checklist page missing from the booklet and instead, there is a white piece of paper slipped in with the checklist printed on it. As a collector, this is annoying...
I got no mythics/shocks in my pack either. The only thing I got worth noting was Boros Reckoner and a foil Boros charm. Did I break even? No. Am I complaining. No. I just can't understand this thread. There's always a risk opening sealed product that you won't get what you want.
Its like playing StarCraft and complaining "ROFL TOSS OP" before rage quitting. So, Protoss is broken because you lost a game? Moving to MTG, you say "I got bad pulls, so WOTC isn't making enough good rares."

For me, it's more like If the average value of the set is less than what I would buy a pack for then it's not worth buying packs.
With GTC, Spending about 400 dollars will get you Every playable rare, Mythic, uncommon and a playset of all the commons. you can't get that with 3.5 boxes.

People just like buying sealed product for the thrill of opening something great. Yet when their pulls are mostly jank, they get upset. Its even more so with fat packs, as people just assume a mythic is guaranteed since theres 9 packs. If you want good cards, just buy singles. I do love cracking packs every now and again, but I often realize I won't get what I want.
Right, right, the set is only out for 3 days and you're expecting all of GTC to make an impact right away? Give it a week or two more and then we'll talk.
As for the fatpack: I tried buying one last friday but my bank card was refused (expired). The guy who bought it pulled Foil Aurelia's Fury and 2 Breeding Pools...

I was expecting at least 10 percent. We shall see what Protour Gatecrash brings to the table.
Evaluating Gatecrash without the shocks is like scraping the sauce, cheese, and pepperoni off your pizza and then going to Yelp to complain that it was bland. Yes, when you take out the 5 most desirable (and most likely to impact standard) rares in the set, it seems underwhelming.

The problem is that most of the playable cards are mythics. In RtR, this is just not the case - there are tons of playable rares in the set and it had a huge impact on Standard.
It's fine to have a few mythics that are standard playable, but the bulk of the standard stuff should have been rare or uncommon - and, besides the shocklands, there really isn't much in the way of playable cards.
The primordial cycle alone consumes nearly 10% of the rare slots, so it's not surprising that I got 2 of them in my fat pack. Sure, I could have just as easily got 2 shocklands, but there is no staples like Dreadbores, Supreme Verdicts or anything like this in the set.
This would be acceptable for a small set, but this is a large set just like RtR. It should have provided cards for standard. And to make sure that packs are cracked, they made all of the good cards mythic.
I'm a bit tired of Wizards making the tournament staples mythic rares, just like they did with Innistrad. It makes cracking packs on an individual level pointless, but someone on the planet has to crack these packs to get them. Since Gatecrash is such a terrible set, the mythics are more likely to have high value compared to the RtR mythics because of the lack of supply, which just further prices people out and makes cracking packs ever more pointless.
It's really a stupid a gimmick - it's too swingy. Either you cash out really well, or get totally ripped off.
I feel your pain. Bought my fatpack (I get at least 1 for every set), and sat down to open it along with a bunch of friends who also got fat packs. Opened a single Stomping Ground, and then every else in the box was junk, no mythics at all. Wouldn't have been so disappointing if the guy next to me didn't open 2 shocklands and 3 mythics in his box. Was I angry? Yeah. But that's the risk of buying sealed instead of singles. It's a lottery, and unless the set has high widespread value, it's usually not worth it.
Buying sealed product for anything but drafting purposes is a bad use of your money. You will rarely get your money back and nearly never get what you're after. Sealed packs and boxes are a lottery, which is to say they're a tax on stupidity.
This go around, I helped my LGS crack a couple cases to fill their online preorders. Considering preordering a box costs at least $100 around here, I can honestly say in the 18+ boxes I opened, none of them had a pile of cards I would have paid $100 for. Consider what $100 will get you in singles. I dropped $60 myself on singles out of this set, and got all the shocks and other cards I'll be needing out of Gatecrash.
OK, without being heavily biased, many people dislike the relatively low power level of Standard, and they don't like how Standard cards often tank hard in price after rotating out.
Well sure, I can agree with that...I guess my question would be where is it that everyone is playing Legacy, EDH, et cetera if not at FNM or other LGS events? According to the events list of everywhere in my area, it's literally either Standard or Booster Draft.

Don't buy packs expecting to make your money back. It rarely happens. I open 1 case of product each set and build from there. Magic is an expensive hobby but I enjoy it. If you cannot afford to play magic don't whine when you don't open godly stuff on a peasant budget.
Sometimes I even feel cheap when I see other people have 700 decks I would have to trade almost my entire collection to build. I work in law enforcement and tell every offender...You get the justice you can afford. The same is true for magic. Don't expect different.
