I know that the difference between unlimited and revised is the extra line around the border, but what if only one of the four sides of the border has the extra line? I recently got a trop with an extra line on the left border but no extra lines around the other borders. is it unlimited or revised?

It's usually incredibly easy to check whether something is revised or unlimited. Revised has a much more washed out look, with the colours looking lighter. Similarly, the wording is different on many cards, particularly the dual lands. Just check out Tropical Island on this link. Check the revised edition and the UNL version and you'll see the wording is very different.
Revised cards use the italicized "t" for the tap symbol whereas unlimited literally says "tap to.....". Also, revised did away with mono and poly artifact types. Anything white bordered with "poly" or "mono" is automatically unlimited. Lastly, the artist name is raised more significantly off of the bottom border, revised cards have the artist name much closer to the border.

The best way to check Revised vs. Unlimited is, of course to check the bevel, however I have seen double-printed cards where it is difficult to tell whether the bevel is single or double and the print is extra-saturated.
In such cases, the next most accurate way is to check the justification. The card name for Unlimited cards is more left justified than Revised cards by about half a characters width. Just compare it to a known Unlimited or Revised card.
