Over at madison, wisconsin the price for prerelease just jumped yet another 4 bucks (in exchange for an extra morningtide booster pack) which makes the grand total a whopping THIRTY bucks. Being a college student, that's a pretty stiff price to pay for just one afternoon of playing magic. Is anyone not going to go because of the price range?
Here in Florida, the price has been $30 as far back as dissension (possibly before that, but i didn't go to prereleases before that). Yeah it's expensive and people complain, but if you want to play at a prerelease, it's either pay that amount or go to Alabama.
So it might stop people from going to this prerelease in particular, but it won't stop them from going to any prereleases after Morningtide.
for me, its been 30 bucks for the past 2 pre-releases, so its not as drastic to my pocket. the thing is though, is i play in the main event and then afterwards i enter in 2HG tourny. so 30+20+30 [my friends birthday is the next day, so it equals as his present] = 80 bucks. not that bad for a time of fun with what i love to do competitively.
i dont spend that much money consistantly, so i have the money to spend...but not all the time...

i've been to 7 california pre-releases and all of them have been either 25 or 30 bucks... not sure when they changed but it was probably about half way. i'm also a college student, and the simple truth is, if you can't afford it, don't go.
Every prerelease I've been to (Darksteel being my first) has been $30. However if you play in two flights then its only $50. I'm not going to go to this one though mainly because I'm in college now, and no one I know threre plays so theres no point in buying up the newer cards until my spring/summer break.
Look at it this way - chances are, you can sell or trade the cards you get there at the highest prices you're going to get. So it costs more, but it's easier to recoup the loss.
Pre-releases have been $30 in St. Louis for as long as I've payed attention - and that's with two boosters, not three.
PRs at 30 sounds normal. I've always paid that much for any main flight, 50 for two if I pay simultaneously.
Besides, the 3 packs are for expansions and the 2 packs are for bigger sets, so either way I'll usually have to try and open some money rares to make up what I spend.
I'm a college student too, but I manage to work enough hours between classes to keep my tuition and textbook costs afloat, so shelling out 30, while annoying, is acceptable. >_> *Sorry if this doesn't help too much.
It's always been thirty for me, with three packs of the new set for Sealed with two guaranteed prize packs (and more if you do well).
It's a little pricey, but always worth it, so I always manage to scrape up the cash- and you get a discount and extra prize packs if you sign up for multiple flights.

They call me Hadoken 'cause I'm down-right fierce.
Where I go the PR's and RE's are 30$ and have been since RAV but I always seem to get in for free.... I guess being good friends with the event organizer and handing him some chase rares everytime we meet on Fridays and Mondays helps though...
In Toronto we've been getting gouged for years on prereleases, PTQs, GPs, Champs, you name it. I only do the precon duelling now, since here prereleases are $40 for the first flight, $35 for the second, $30 for the third on. That's $40 for a flight, there's no main event. It's ridiculous.

Yeah this is right. It's been 30 since dissension, but in georgia they used to do a discount where if you played in your first flight you'd get 5 dollars off another event and your next flight was only 20. Which means it's 50 for two flights or only 40 for a flight and a draft. This was, of course, before unity entertainment took over. The Georgia PR guys had a fire at their store and Unity stepped in and took over. I don't complain much about it now thought since there not any other close place to go. Also, I heard before the price jumped to 30 they used to charge players like $10 just to get into the PR for the weekend. Now that's price gouging that'll lose some players and at least they dropped that.
Anyone else have to pay just to get into the PR?

98% of the internet population has a Myspace. If you're part of the 2% that isn't an emo, copy and paste this into your sig.
Hey, you. Yes, you reading this sig. Get off your computer, go find a copy of Skies of Arcadia: Legends and play it. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
I actually don't see the issue with the price of their pre-releases. I'll be attending again this time around, and if possible, will play in more than one pod. A traffic accident on the way there prevented me from accomplishing that last time.
Also, it's worth noticing that if you have a PayPal account, and are able to decide what you will play before you play, you may preregister for cheaper, so long as it is not the Saturday Morning 9am pod. Check their site for details, but you can save some cash on it.
Shad, Legion prereleases have been $28/$30 since around Time Spiral. (and it's also Minneapolis that uses that structure)
I know people that have not done these events because of the price, but a lot of people that play more casually consider this one of their few events that they regularly attend. I know of several college students that play in these either because it's a good weekend for trading, or it is one of the few things they splurge in.

Gray Matter Conventions has been $30 for a tournament pack and 2 boosters (big set PR) or 3 boosters (little sets) with prize distribution being 13, 9, and 5 packs since I started playing sanctioned events in Ravnica.
They're giving more perks, though, lately, such as with news of playmats.
It was 30 in kami block. Gray matter kind of blows compared to Seattle. I was coincidentally out there the day of the Planar Chaos PR, and went, it was AMAZINGLY better run, a better bargain, cleaner, brighter, and best of all we weren't kicked out by some guy who flickered the lights.
It was 5 rounds, and because it was a 64 man pod, for doing 1 match better than at gray matter, 4-0-1, I got 24 packs, instead of 13 or w/e.
We live in a country were ~50% of the populace believe public schooling is a socialist conspiracy and that being called Einstein is an insult. We could try and fix it, but unfortunately the other 50% don't believe in euthanasia.
I go to the pre-release in Minnesota, which is run by the same people as in Madison. I am not surprised that the prices are going up. I remember the time that packs were only $3 retail and I thought that was high. I expect packs to go for as high as $5 by 2010. Besides that the company running the event knows that the small price change will not affect the hardcore gamers from coming anyways, which means more profit and that is their whole goal. The heightened price of a sealed event at the pre-release is not necessarily cheap but you are getting to play the cards almost a month before you can buy them elsewhere, so all in all if I can afford it I guess to me it is worth it.
It's all econimics. Pay attention! 1993 - $2.95/pack plus tax $3.25. 2008 - $3.99/pack plus tax $4.33.
So yeah, 15 years it jumped one whole dollar. Get over it! That's what happens in life. Prices go up. Did you expect that when movie theatres charged a nickle per ticket that it would always remain at that price? Things change. Oil prices are up. Minimum wage is up. To offset, prices go up. End of story
I recall about two years ago, before MSRP when up to $3.69 that i could get packs for $2.25. Now they're up to $2.50 where i get them. To counter it, I stopped playing
As I last recalled Grey Matter was 30 around darksteel. Maybe I am off. Plus the prize support each year seams to go More south at there events. I plan on attending BUT may not actually play in it. May just hit the dealer tables. 30 dollar entry doesn't faze me. 30 dollar Plus crap ass support does.

Then again, consider they generally have very lenient prize support, and they have to pay for that somehow.
It's pretty normal for a PR to be around $30~. Don't sweat the small stuff.
