Mark Rosewater's "Making Magic" article today was an update on his "Timmy/Johnny/Spike" article from about four years ago. It's got a new test, using Ravnica cards this time, and new definitions of the three (four?) different player types.
So what do you think of the explanations of the different player types? Do you like this test more than the old one? Does the result match with how you view yourself? Do you think this article is better or more valid than the old one?

What in the name of all that's holy are you smoking????
I think it's too deceptively easy to define timmy, spike, jonny and whatever, and then lump them together in convenient combinations.
You can have all three at different times in the same person. The article is very cute, but it doesn't give players much credit for exploring other avenues of the game and their personalities.
I came out as a Spike which is mostly accurate since i almost never go to a tourney not expecting to at least top 8

I however don't actually know what a Vorthos is.
A Vorthos is a guy who plays magic simply for the flavor. i think that being a Vorthos would be very fun unfortunately i dont have time to read all the books. for more in-depth analysis of Vorthos check out this article. and the rest of Covatta's article are all about flavor.

I'm praying for rain And I'm praying for tidal waves I wanna see the ground give way. I wanna watch it all go down. Mom please flush it all away. I wanna watch it go right in and down. I wanna watch it go right in. Watch you flush it all away.
I ama bit Vorthosian, although it didn't show in my results of mono-Johnny. Honestly, I think I'm J/s/evensmallerv. But even after four years, you can't quite hash out whjat is the perfect category for each card.
As for the cards I picked, I nabbed Circu, Followed Footsteps, Glimpse, Rumbling Slum, and Quicken. And did anyone else have a really hard time picking cards like I did? i wanted to click them all soooo badly. I can't help but consume this entire block.
Zendikar = Mirrodin/Urza reborn, just with more money rares and mythic bull ****. I hope to god we get another Masques block after this, jumping man on a ****ing pogo stick.

The card was already revealed. Failure to read the thread = spam warning. Also, failure to be funny.
i personally am more of a timmy-spike, i want to win and i tune decks to do well, but i also play just to have fun, and i love bashing face in. combo decks never really did it for me though, and i have no real inclination towards breaking bad cards.
sorry about not having a vorthos/type/type option, i didn't think about it at the time. if it applies to you just answer as type/type in the poll and add vorhos in the thread

You mean Johnny/Timmy/Spike?
What other avenues of the game do you mean?
And this isn't meant to give insight into their personalities.
I agree with Rosewater that Vorthos is really seperate from the other three. However, confined within those, I'd consider myself a Spike/Johnny/Vorthos, in that order.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, the wisdom to know the difference, and a ****ing chainsaw.
Hehe yup, I voted on this poll before I took the test, and I was correct.
I am a Johnny/spike through and through. I enjoy the casual side of the game, and enjoy making creative and original decks, but I enjoy making them as good as they can be at the same time
I voted for Dark Confidant, Life from the Loam, Lightning Helix, Rumbling Slum, and Moldervine Cloak and came out as a Spike. However I know that I'm actually a Timmy/Spike, so I voted for that.
I'm a Timmy/Spike as I was the first time around. Turning men sideways for the win has a distinct feeling very different from just winning by any means.
When my Spiritmonger and Angel of Despair are smushing your face with Pernicous Deed backup I'm certainly in a good mood.
I'm also a big Vorthos as well. Although I doubt I'll ever play a single legend "Just because it feels wrong otherwise".
I think why have a /spike is because i on this fourm. I want to do well in FMN & ect. However i love finding tech and building a multude of decks.
Also I feel that I have a Vothos side to me. I have to play with one picture of some thing. If it is a island, I have to play with only one art. I dislike having multiple art in card in my decks.
I came out as spike/timmy, but I am a bit of a vorthos as well. I collect foil rares, but never actually play them. I actually had a "legend" uber-casual deck that used day of destiny and every u/w legend in kamigawa, but only one of each because "it just wouldn't be right". I also collect arena lands (the promotional basic lands with alternate art and the little arena league symbol where the expansion symbol would be), and try to use only arena lands and no other ones. Other than that, I do well at FNM (not with the "legend" deck, I use a good one), usually with a 3/1 record, with the loss near the end. However, I build my own decks and do not net deck. I try to build fun and competitive decks, and collect like mad.

I came out as pure Spike. This came to me as a surprise, though looking back, I can see the changes. I took the first test twice, once long ago, once somewhat recently, and now this one. At first I came out Johnny, second was Johnny/Spike, and lastly was Mono-Spike.
Reading through his descriptions of some of the Spikes were almost eerie with how freaking close they got. And the Uber-Johnny caught me out of left field, as I am known in person for being the guy with the DoaTS tech, or the one "trying" to get the Witch-Maw Nephilim or Blood Funnel to work. Some of them do, some of them don't.
Did I mention that reading over "Nuts and Bolts Spike" left chills going down my spine, as I play mostly limited events, and drool at mtgo for the any-time drafts?
I came out as a Timmy/Jonny/Spike, with some Vorthos thrown to the mix. No surprise to me, actually ...
- I'm a Timmy, because I love the social aspects of the game, especially multiplayer games
- I'm a Jonny, because I love to show up with weird decks that create confusion and mayhem
- I'm a Spike, because I love to work with powerful, efficient cards that 'get the job done'
- I'm a Vorthos, because I love to discuss about storyline, background and the overall feeling of being a spell-flinging planeswalker ...
The test got my type right (Spike, although I'm more of a Spike/Vorthos), but I still thing it can't be really trusted.
Also, I didn't see myself described properly on one of the article's many stereotypes. I'm a 'tuner' spike, but with a catch: I love white, so most of the times, I'll play white decks. I still want to win just as bad as the next guy, but I want to win with Plains. So I guess that makes me a 'selective spike' or something.
So what do you think of the explanations of the different player types? Do you like this test more than the old one? Does the result match with how you view yourself? Do you think this article is better or more valid than the old one?

Vintage - Manaless Ichorid, Flash, Gush-a-Tog

Vorothos: Flavor
Melvin: Collecting?
???: Trading?
Thus when he unveils the other part of the second trinity, you can be a Johnny/Spike/Vorothos/Melvin or something. Or even all 6, I suppose.

From the cards put forth by Maro I chose:
Dark Confidant
Quicken
Char
Ghost Council of Orzhova
Lightning Helix
What did you guys choose and which profile did you end up with?
Stitch in Time
Rumbling Slum
Moldervine Cloak
Giant Solifuge
Char.
I came out as a Spike/Timmy, exactly what I got on the other one.
Dark Confidant
Debtors' Knell
Ghost Council of Orzhova
Life from the Loam
Warp World
And I came out Spike/Johnny.
You mean Johnny/Timmy/Spike?

I am a Johnny/spike through and through. I enjoy the casual side of the game, and enjoy making creative and original decks, but I enjoy making them as good as they can be at the same time
My choices:
Dark Confidant
Mimeofacture
Life from the Loam
Firemane Angel
Char
Reasons I enjoy playing:
The art
The mental challenge
The challenge of deck building
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind
Debtor's knell
Ghost Council of Orzhova
Life From the Loam
and I can't remember the 5th.
It's the same as I got on the first poll, though.
When my Spiritmonger and Angel of Despair are smushing your face with Pernicous Deed backup I'm certainly in a good mood.

Maro then called be a Timmy/Spike.
This one; Johnny/Spike

I voted Johnny, because that was what I scored on the first one, didn't realize they did another edition...
I think my five cards were Ghost Dad, the Firemind, Warp World, Helix, and Char.
