Amonkhet should be one of the first sets developed and designed fully knowing that Core Sets are dead and anything they want to do for Modern or other formats has to happen in Standard first. We also have a returning mechanic in Cycling and a ton of zombies thanks to Embalm. I wondered if anyone had some predictions for cool reprints. Mine?
- Death Baron's price is out of control and he would be a spicy addition to standard especially with Embalm.
- Tranquil Thicket, Lonely Sandbar, etc. would be great in the new card face (with chances for Foil and new art) and kind of a big deal for Modern Aggro-Loam decks. They might even do something in standard since we live in a world with The Gitrog Monster, Splendid Reclamation, and Delirium. The Urza's Saga versions (Slippery Karst, Remote Isle would be overall less good but still interesting.
- Related to the above, Ash Barrens is probably a little bit stronger than they want cards in Standard to be and Cycling does not necessarily equal Landcycling, but it would be awesome to get more access to it.
- Parallel Lives was noticeably absent from MM17 and would be incredible in a format full of servos, thopters, embalmed tokens, and clues.
- I'll be curious to see if we get any strong answers to Embalm. I anticipate no, so probably no Rest in Peace, but maybe Magma Spray and Dissipate will be harmless enough (especially since they did promise to start putting stronger answers in Standard).

How exactly is a card that requires mana of any color to cycle less good than one that requires a specific color?

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
How exactly is a card that requires mana of any color to cycle less good than one that requires a specific color?
Requiring 2 mana as opposed to 1 is a big deal.
So is requiring a mana of a specific color rather than two of any color.
If you can't generate, say, U for Lonely Sandbar, are you really going to want to cycle it anwyays? You cycle them when you have enough of the color they produce. Sometimes you're tapped out of that color when you'd want to cycle them, but I imagine that happens less often than the number of times you're hamstrung by the fact that you have to pay twice as much for the colorless cyclers.
Not that this is really relevant to the conversation, mind.

I mostly play commander, so both are equally useful. I don't see one kind better than the other, but when it comes to triggering certain abilities, the originals tend to be better.

In Commander, the originals are usually better although in one or two colors it is a push (although there are few monocolor or two-color decks I'd go out of my way to run any cycling lands in, mostly just Titania, Protector of Argoth and The Gitrog Monster and I'd run every cycling land I legally could for those commanders). In Legacy/Tiny Leaders/Kitchen Casual the originals are generally better as well due to Fluctuator. But in Modern, which is what this printing would do, only paying one mana for the AggroLoam deck is a huge game. Hence my (slight) preference for the Onslaught lands.

I don't really play neither standard or modern. I used to Draft at FNM, but the local FLGS closed shop due to rising crime rates in the area, and getting screwed over by the city one to many times in favor for one of their rival shops (Yay, nepotism /sarcasm), and the rest of the game shops are to far away for me to be able to go to them to play FNM, so. :/

Fair enough. I feel the pain, as I am also mostly casual but I do love to spectate and brew for all formats.
A few other interesting reprint ideas occurred to me
- Liliana's Caress (or, related, Megrim and Waste Not). Take THAT cycling/madness/Roflcopter! Yes I know Smuggler's Copter is banned, but they didn't know that when they made the set. Caress is awful expensive for an uncommon even though 8-rack is a pretty Tier 3 deck so it would be a welcome reprint.
- I only found those because I was gatherer-searching for Warden of the Beyond, a card I have a soft spot for that seems pretty good in a block full of Embalm.

I could see any of those reprinted. Heck, I could even see a reprint of Afterlife, as it fits the flavor.
