So, we have the Masterpiece series turning up in pretty much every set from here.
And it's a limited, hard-to-get collection of in-demand staples foiled out using a different process. And the set of cards is themed. Sounds familiar, no?
IMHO, they're already struggling somewhat to find decent themes for From the Vault every edition, and this is basically taking the FtV idea and slapping it into boosters.
At this point, about the only reason they'd have to keep FtV going is as a reward to your friendly local LGS. Otherwise, surely canning FtV and moving everything into Masterpiece slots just makes booster sales increase, correct? Which increases an LGS's sales without the need to throw FtVs at them?
Masterpieces can't be ordered as a complete set currently, though if they introduce that option then FtV might be in trouble.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Agreed. I've seen they've gone down a slightly different route on MTGO, but man... even if they make their way around to including these in MTGO redemptions...
Masterpieces - with their 1 in 400 something chance to show up in a randomized product - are never going to kill off or replace a Collector's product that gives you what is advertised straight up front. They're two way different products sold in completely different ways with completely different purposes and target audiences. It's quite a large stretch to say that one is going to kill the other.
FTV foiling seems identical to masterpiece foiling at least for kaladesh inventions. As for FTV dying, meh I doubt it. It could, but it could easily not as well.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Yeah it seems unfortunate that the inventions are ftv foiled Not a set foil. Its an odd look. The pretty bronze border but then the picture and text is a bland lines through it type foil. Set foils seems to emphasize parts of the picture and the foiling is rainbow like. I don't know hard to explain but its like ftv with the inventions and I thought that's the foiling people Disliked the most so weird that's what they would use and not the same foiling as saw the expeditions
FTV allows printing of things that can't go into Masterpiece series stuff due to flavor reasons. Masterpiece series stuff are flavor locked to the plane that is the set they are from, and also the timeline it takes place in, so you probably won't see things like changed characters and destroyed artifacts and locations or lost magics or whatnot. FTV doesn't have that problem.
Masterpiece series stuff could though lead to a re-focusing of what is put into FTV sets to favor stuff that can't be put in Masterpiece series sets.

They have the same holographic look, but the FTV cards are completely glossed, whereas the masterpieces are glossy-bordered with matte/metallic art and text boxes. They feel quite different, but do look a like at a glance.
I feel they're independent. I like getting FTV as a whole set, but if I went for a Masterpiece set, i have to buy them as singles. The masterpieces seem to be, on the balance, more valuable, and allow for a larger "theme." But some themes only fit for a smaller size - like dragons or Armageddon. While a 60 card subset works for lands or artifacts, I wouldn't want most of 60 dragons or board wipes, cuz most of them would be crappy.

I dunno, Tarkir seems like it could support Dragon-themed Masterpieces.

I agree that Tarkir can support dragons. And with a second look, there are plenty of dragons, especially legendaries, that are powerful. However, with the exception of the planeswalkers and dragonlord you listed, I personally find it a little hard to get excited over a dragon masterpiece set. Unlike artifacts and lands, which are relevant to every player, dragons usually end up as junk rares, even ones that are fairly costed, as they are irregularly used in Modern and Standard (more so now that we lost the dragonlords in standard).
I feel there's just not the same value to be had in dragons as there is in artifacts or lands, but I would happily be wrong about it.

Your point is valid. Dragons will be junk rare compared to Expeditions and Inventions. But lands and artifacts are pretty much the best and most expensive cards to have as masterpieces. These are made to excite collectors and hype the product line. I have a feeling the masterpieces will slowly shift in terms of value. Some will have an low average value. Some will have high variance. When we return to Tarkir that is the expected theme... as these Dragons will come from the dragon tempest.
As to the question whether Masterpieces are replacing FTV, it does not really replace it directly, but I feel that FTV may run out of small intersting themes by itself.
Agreed. As we go on, Wizards will have to balance out each Masterpieces - perhaps a reprint cycle of the most valued or powerful of an earlier block, or a set of legendaries - but the ubiquitous value found in the 2 sets so far can't hold up. Unless the next set is called "Amonkeht: Much needed modern reprints", there's a good chance that most will end in the ~30 range, or low-end for a Masterpiece.
