I did some research on Magic memes today, which contributed to a lot of the card suggestions.
Traveling Philosopher is the same size as Grizzly Bears, leading to jokes about Magic philosophers being tough enough to take on bears hand-to-hand.
Horseshoe Crab is one of the most popular "don't **** with" creature cards for being able to take on Elven Warriors, Bears, and so forth, combined with its mundane appearance.
Do I need to explain the memetic status of Storm Crow?
Totally Lost features a Homunculus named Fblthp, who became an unexpectedly popular character during RTR block's run.
Chimney Imp is memetic for being ridiculously costed for its size and effect.
Uncle Istvan once sported its own unique subtype, way back in the early days of Magic when Creatures were Summons and each Summon could have its own subtype. So Uncle Istvan was Summon - Uncle Istvan, which is often brought up jokingly by players whenever discussing bringing back old subtypes.
Jaya Ballard, Task Mage is quoted on many cards, usually with a witty comment relating to flame. Try Gatherer's advanced search using "Jaya Ballard" in the flavor text field.
Brushwagg, like Uncle Istvan, stood out for having its own subtype back in the day and even got to keep its subtype after the grand creature type update.
Savage Punch became memetic within minutes of its reveal at PAX 2014, used to show off Surrak Dragonclaw and the savagery of the Temur. Even R&D knew the card would become popular as they designed Epic Confrontation as a mirror in DTK.

I doubt they'd base a FTV so closely on a deck, they'd probably be fine with basing it on merfolk, but they'd probably leave out Mutavault, Phantasmal Image, Mana Leak, Aether Vial, Spreading Seas, Daze, Wasteland, and Counterspell, and put in more merfolk creature directly related stuff, even if it's useless to the deck, like Aquitect's Will, Merrow Commerce, Judge of Currents, Lullmage Mentor, Stonybrook Banneret, Sygg, River Guide, Stonybrook Schoolmaster, Summon the School, Wanderwine Hub, Wanderwine Prophets. Well... actually, maybe they would, they seem to be slightly better on FTV choices than some other products, certainly.
